On the old American Bandstand with Dick Clark everyone who was a guest singer had to lip-sync their performance. Not a single performance was live. However some artist did rebel against ABs policy. Madonna danced around, Johnny Rotten sat with the crowd and let them hold he microphone, Prince mouthed wrong lyrics, Debbie Harry pulled the mic down when the vocals started on one of Blondies performances. I am sure there were others but those are the ones I can remember.

This is a little different than Milli Vanilli though.

There is a lot of **** you watch that is playing alon with a tape. All the 1/2 time shows at the Super Bowl including when they sing the National Anthym is ALL fake. Anyone remember seiing Carlos Santana a few years back ? He was so far off on those little lead thingy's it wasn't even funny.

When Judas Priest does Hellion/Electric Eye, the begining is pre-recorded. There is only 4 or 5 guitar parts in there.

I don't know about the auto -tuner thing. I have seen quite a few mainstream artists hit bad notes live(metallica, anthrax, kiss, aerosmith, bowie, skynard, zz top, clint black...don't ask...). As for the pre-recorder intros, that's no big deal-those things are really more to get the crowd going because they know one of their favs is coming up. Ashlee Simpson is a hack, and even if she does sing on her studio albums, part of being a performer is recreating it live. She (and other pop artists) might get a little more respect if they did all their litle dances and sang live-even if they are a little off key.

I figured the Hellion was prerecorded. Priest was killer regardless. Absolutely killer. Ashley is a hack but most of the premanufactured teen pop stars are. Its really cool to see things F-up for them. Most of them aren't actually musicians anyway. They are just dancing models with a record contract.

About Maiden, I don't know if every show has a prerecorded intro, but the three Maiden DVDs that I have are all like that.

"Live After Death" ("Powerslave" tour) is the one you're talking about, where the intro is Churchill's speech and the beginning of "Aces High". Then the band rushes on stage all at once. Awesome.

"Maiden England" ("Seventh Son" tour) has a prerecorded "Moonchild" intro, and as soon as the fast bit begins, the band rushes on stage all at once.

"Rock In Rio" ("Brave New World" tour) has a prerecorded intro, but it's the song "Arthur's Farewell" from the movie "First Knight", and then as soon as that song ends, the band rushes on stage to play "The Wicker Man".

So, I don't think it's a new concept to Maiden.

Okay, onto "The Hellion". On Halford's "Live Insurrection" double-live CD, it's the band themselves playing "The Hellion" and "Electric Eye". Sounded awesome!

Yeah, a rhythm guitar and a lead run through a
harmonizer will recreate The Hellion very nicely. Get a IPS33 off Ebay for $75 and you can do it too!

As for Ashlee, I bet the person who cues the
tapes is fired!

the lipsynching itself, as mentioned, isn't new. hell, look at any award show beyonce is on. she truly can sing, yet she rarely does live. i don't care if ashlee sings or not, but the utter lack of professionalism is sad. i saw it live, and i was waiting for her to stop the band. instead, she just punked out and left.
