hear-thru headphones?

What are these? My drummer Dad is looking for some headphones he can "hear through" while playing live- I'm not exactly sure what he's talking about.
I did a search on the major brands, but mostly came up with studio phones.

can't be.. you put ear plugs over those and can't hear any outside noise. Pretty funny actually, you'll be playing in front of 50,000 people in a stadium but all you hear is your band playing at like speech level heh.

He wants to be able to hear himself and the rest of the band, that I know.
They don't play large venues, unless they're outside.

Then they must be in-ear monitors like Box said... you pretty much hear yourself and the rest of the band really clearly, without outside noise getting in the way.

It sounds like he is talking about earphone which do not attenuate the outside world sound at all..in effect you can hear through them. I have just such a set - Sennheiser HD495. These are plently lound enough and high quality enough to enjoy music from a good audio system but allow you to still hear conversation, dorrbells, telephones etc through them...

When I use in ears I insist on an ambient feed so I can hear what the hell is going on out side of our mix. We had our bass player trying to stop us because of a problem and we could not hear him yelling to wait so off we went [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

I think for a drummer it's monitors.

You CAN actually hear through most versions, for the reaction of the crowd or something similar.

Yeah... I think in-ear monitors are what he needs. That sounds like the ticket. I did look into those Sennheiser headphones that were mentioned, but couldn't find too much info on that particular model. [img]/images/graemlins/scratchhead.gif[/img]
