Re: The Best Horror and Suspense Films

when Bill mentioned Pumpkin Head, for some reason Eraserhead sprang to mind. And then lo, he mentions it further down his post!

I'm the opposite to Ace - I much prefer suspense to gore. Not really into horror films as such, although I do like a scary or creepy movie. Just not a gory one.

my faves would include:

<ul type="square">[*]The Ring[*]Body Snatchers[*]The Frighteners (got this on DVD the other day, forgot how much I like it!)[*]Aliens[*]John Carpenter's The Thing[*]Donnie Darko[*]The Ninth Gate[*]Delicatessen![*]Dark City[*]Next of Kin[*]Coma
I've seen a couple recently on cable that I just can't recall the names of right now. So I might have to add to this when I think of them

How about bad horror flicks? I remember being scared witless as a kid by the previews to The Hills Have Eyes! Can't forget Christine. Or there's Children of the Corn. I was dragged along to House on Haunted Hill (not the classic Vincent Price version). I wonder the thinking behind these kind of "remakes"

Hey Bill is that "Don't be afraid of the Dark" one your taking about the one with the three little monkey like creatures with prune heads that live in the chimney of some house? I remember one like that from a long time ago.

Also I have to mention "Night of 1000 Corpses". Some crazy $hit there from Rob Zombie.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that as well. Very similar to TCM. Rob's working on the sequel to it, too.

Took long enough (thank you Bill) fo Lynch to get some Recognition. Alright most horror movies don't freak me out but Lynch does. Hell even Blue Velvet feaks me out. Granted more Surreal are his movies but there is no way you can tell me that in Fire Walk with Me when Bob is in her room behind the dresser that it isn't freaky. What about that Freaky David Bowie scene? Lost Highway when Robert Blake is telling Bill Pullman to call his house?

The Shinning scared the piss outta me when young though

I am a scary movie conniseur. Here is my list in no particular order.
Halloween
The newest Exorcist movie. This is the 2nd scariest movie I have ever seen.
The Exorcist (The Heretic) The one with Father Karas in the mental institution. REALLY SCAREY
Blacula (I'm serious)
The Evil Dead
Salems Lot
AND NOW!!!!!
THE SCARIEST MOVIE EVER MADE WITH OUT A DOUBT IS:
DARKNESS FALLS
It is the most suspensful friggin scariest movie I have ever seen. I had to close my eyes at some points. When it was finally over I was totally stressed out.

Hey Bill, you must be a real fan of the first two Hellraiser movies!! Not only did you add them to my list, where they already were, you did it twice. Also The Gates of Hell is the same movie as City of the Living Dead, A lot of Fulci's movies had more than one English title. Also you touched on quite a few others I really like, the Christopher Lee Draculas, Re-Animator, the Conqueror Worm.

I really don't watch I Spit on Your Grave too often, something about a 40 minute rape scene that just kinda makes me uneasy.
