• Touring with firearms

OK, I was wondering what kind of experiences anyone on this board might have had with touring with a handgun. I am not an idiot, I am a formoer U.S. Marine Infantryman, I know weapons safety inside and out to the point that I can still recite the four weapons saftey rules.

I have a .45 that I am thinking about taking on tour with me soon. I've read all the regulations about flying with a handgun, and I'm cool with that. I'm not some douchbag that walks around with a gun tucked into his waistband, I plan on being totally responsible with the weapon, as I have been my whole life. I was just wondering about state regulations and stuff. Any useful advice is appreciated.

Forget it. The gun laws of each state are so messed up, and so different from one another that it's almost impossible to be compliant in every state you may travel through.

For example: A loaded gun in the glove box of a car is legal in Arizona. As soon as you cross the state line into California though, that's two federal offences.

I'm reading through a gun laws book as I try to answer your question, and here's a good quote from the author: "...the days of traveling armed and being responsible for your own safty and protection have all but ended in the United States for people whi leave their home state. Carrying a firearm (armed and ready)is pratically impossible unless you are willing to face misdemeanor of felony charges as you pass through each state."

I could go on and on, but the bottom line is...forget it, bro.

Yes I have played all my gigs with a handgun in my pocket ...even while playing...but I'm a cop..

I don't think you could carry a weapon otherwise..unless they passed that carry and conceal law in that state ...but seeing that bands play in "liquor establishments" ...guns are prohibited "legally" in such places ...even though you may be commisioned.

Even cops are not allowed to have weapons in bars..but we do anywhoo.

A lot of friends of mine got fired or screwed because they got caught during a scuffle or shooting..

I read a lot of Massad Ayoob, and he tells of policemen being hassled outside of their jurisdiction for carrying a weapon, especially when out of state.

Sad, as those are the guys I'f prefer to see with guns around me ya know...

You could get a side job as a bounty hunter in order to get a carry permit from your local authorities. They can go armed wherever. I don't know if you'd actually have to work in the business to keep up a certificate, but it's a thought.

Now if you shoot some fukkers wo are making off with band gear, I think you'd be fukked regardless. Self-defense would probaly be fine, shooting theives probably not.

I was going to keep it unloaded in the van, and not bring it inside anywhere. I live here in California, which I assume has the strictest gun laws, but it is still legal to carry them unloaded in the vehicle. The only time I've ever even considered bringing a gun into a venue was the one time that someone who I knew to be a gang member was there, and I had seen him waving his gun around before. I had heard him complaining that he couldn't bring it into the venue, and then I heard that he was arguing with security. I won't say whether I grabbed the piece or not, but there was a potential for trouble. At another show that I was doing at that venue, another guy tried to get passed security with a gun after getting into a fight in the bar. I had already left for the night, or I would have pistol whipped the crap out of him with his own gun. As for people stealing crap, I can outrun just about anyone, especially if they are carrying an amp. And at close-quarters, I am just as deadly with the huge razor-sharp Cold Steel I keep in my toolbox as I am with a handgun. I just like to have my .45 around in case the sh:t hits the fan.

Re: Touring with firearms

New York's gun laws are more restrictive; in the city handgun possession is pretty much illegal. As far as your gun being unloaded,
If the magazine is loaded but out of the gun it can't be within your reach or you're still busted in California.

Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi are states where you can get a carry permit as long as you don't have a felony record. It's pretty much just a matter of applying and getting the permit.

I still like the bounty hunter idea.

Nothing like having two states with some of the lowest education levels in the country, making a carry permit easy to obtain.

Yeah, but you don't need a Ph.D to shoot a deer, and a Ph.D won't help against a mean gator or bear - or burglar!

I wouldn't chance it really. As much as bands (long hair, tatts etc) and out of state people are targets for police, I wouldn't want to chance it if I were you.

Rich, you can add Missouri to your list. We can get concealed carry permits since around May of this year. I think all states should legalize it. If we all carried I'm sure it wouldn't take too long to weed out the wierdos in this country!
