It's funny, people bag on Stryper for Christian themes, but you're supposed to dig Slayer even if you're not Satanic; double standard there. Of course I know it's a gimmick for Slayer, but still.... I also feel the only killer musician in Slayer is Dave Lombardo, or Paul Bostaph. The Stryper guys are much better musicians except where drums are concerned.

I agree Lerx, My freinds all mke fun of it Stryper because of all the God stuff in the songs, but when I first got into stryper I was 5, Alll I cared about was that they looked cool, and played cool guitars. Plus Calling On You is one of the best Pop/Rock songs ever

Re: stryper most underrated band in the 80s

Not to be argumentative, but I always thought just the opposite. They may have been decent musicians, but they kinda bored me...alot. A buddy of mine was really into them, but it was because of the christian theme more than anything. I figured that their popularity was because of that, not in spite of it. Kinda like their schtick to get attention, like Kiss with makeup, then without, then with...

Yeah, Faster Pcat was way better than they were given credit for. So was Bang Tango. Saw them live a couple times, and they were incredible.

Well, you can probably tell where I stand by my avitar and my signature line

Seeing these guys live on the last tour was incredible. It was an all out, 80's metal, guitar blasting, harmony lead, shred fest just like the good old days. Michael Sweet and Oz Fox are both incredible guitar players. Oz Fox has probably the best tone of any metal player from that era. Michael Sweet can play AND sing. I also think Robert Sweet is a "hell of a" drummer.

Yep, I kinda dig these guys

Lillian Axe might be the most underrated band though...another one of my favorites.

The thing that always drove me away from Stryper was Sweet's vocals. I have never liked the sound of his voice. The music was always pretty cool, the up-tempo songs anyway, but his voice killed it for me.

Is "The Way" a Stryper song? If it is, that one is awesome.

Beaner (please note that IS his username, Shawn and Tim! :-/ ), you might have liked some early Stryper better; The Yellow and lack Attack and Soldiers Under Command rocked as hard as anything in the early 80s. They did get a lot more commercial later but were still good, but songs like Loud And Clear and Soldiers Under Command are great metal songs of their time. I think lots of metalheads are just put off by Christianity and are not going to like anything by a Christian band.

He is one of the best I've heard, maybe top 5 if I had rate 'em. As a band Stryper is one of my favorites.

My favorite singer is probably a toss up between Sammy Hagar or Tim "Ripper" Owens. These guys sing with so much emotion it's incredible.

A few years ago, my wife and I went to see "Jesus Christ Superstar" at the theatre. The guy playing Judas was incredible, he really was a cross between Sammy and Ripper. As soon as he started singing, my wife leaned over and said "I bet you'd love to have a band with that guy"

Michael Sweet's voice reminds me of Dennis DeYoung's, of Styx. Great voice but if you didn't like later Styx when DeYoung went all Barry Manilow, it might be off-putting to hear
Michael Sweet singing similarly.
