Today is the 229th anniversary of the birthdate of the United States Marine Corps.
In 1775, the Continental Congress of the forming Union that we now know as the USA formed 2 Battalions of Marines under the Department of the Navy. This force was originally recruited out of a bar, called the Tun Tavern in Philly to assemble the Officers and Enlisted Marines of the day.
Since then, we have undergone many changes, adaptations, and trials by fire, but we have perservered. Names such as Iwo Jima, Vietnam, Beirut, Desert Storm/Shield, and numerous others have been instilled in the American populace. We are the 911 force of the President, who doesn't need Congressional approval to send us anywhere in the world. We are one of if not the world preeminent forces in readiness to be directed as needed.
To all the past, present, future, and those Marines no longer with us, happy birthday and Semper Fidelis Marines
