RANT: When did rock radio lyrics start to suck?

Not radio, it has pretty much always sucked, but while I was torturing a poor project Jackson import on the work bench today, I had our only 'hard' rock station on, and here are some of the lyrics I heard all day:

"why am I so broken"
"our house is not a home"
"if we drop our tuning enough, maybe nobody will notice that I'm a vagina"
"my daddy didn't love me"
"i don't feel good"
"whaaaaa"

WHAT THE FUKK IS UP WITH THIS? [img]/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]

Sex.

Drugs.

Sex.

Rebellion.

Sex with drug crazed rebellious chicks.

That is rock.

A lot of the music I've heard before, without paying much attention - pretty much the way that I listen to the radio. If I can tolerate (or like) the music, I leave it on. When I want to listen to good stuff, I play a CD.

But these lyrics? Rock is about "the hell are you looking at?" not, "my mommy didn't hug me enough."

They should be ashamed - especially the ones with badass songs. What kind of douche would be jamming on a really ass kicking riff, then let the singer start making up lyrics like "my mommy didn't breast feed me long enough, waaaaaaahhhh"?

I there is some truth to all this. About 1990 - 91, while we were doing ourselves in, Kurt's band was starting to take off. That was also when I put down the guitars, and picked up other things. Like plastic gallons of Skol vodka. And cadet uniforms (my own, you pervs). Then, agonizingly later, books. And when I picked the guitar back up, metal was "over". Maybe it is all my fault.

I think rock lyrics started to suck around 1978...tell me that most of the hard rock and metal records put out in the 80s had brilliant lyrics with a straight face. Do I like that stuff? Yes. Do I like grunge stuff (minus Nirvana and Hole) better? Yes. I think you guys have a pretty misconstrued idea of what grunge was.

That's about the time I stopped playing guitar and started getting serious about my career. I like to blame grunge for that but the truth is I really got into computers a lot. These days my music is my passion again. I like it this way better.
