Re: May buy a new \'puter soon...

I go to www.digitaldeals.net to get the best deals on dells.
I got a decent P4 2.0/512MB RAM, and an 18" LCD for $599. Onboard graphics, so that sux for games, but rock solid. That was last year.
NEVER call Dell sales, always find an online, stacked coupon thing from fatwallet, digitaldeals, or some other coupon clipper site. They usually have hot deals posted and all the steps you click through to get them delivered.

I know its over, but I just got a gateway not to long ago (I used to not like them to much) And it was either Gateway or Dell, Ive had a dell before and it sucked and support was VERY BAD, gateway is good with MANY extra features you wont use..1200 for 190 gigs, 512 RAM, 7 USB, 17" flat screen (no back and everything), Has outputs to hook up to your TV, your TV to it and everything, has a badass soundcard that just makes recording a breeze....1200 is steep but you can go to BestBuy and its like 50 a month, (and its easy to get approved) Has 3 diffrent people using it and works good...might be an idea..

There is a reason why the name brand computers are so cheap. The use the cheapest components possible. If you just want to surf the web, then a Dell will be ok, but if you want to play games or record on your PC, go down to your local computer shop and have them make you a PC or get one online. I did my homework and got the P4 2.4c which is notorious for it's overclocking. It runs as stable as anything at 3.2 GHz.

Hey Chuck, when you're ready to do this, give me a buzz bro, I'll help you out.

As for screwing PriceWatch, have a look at the vendors listed there, NewEgg is one of them, but not the cheapest in all cases.

I just bought 2 boards, 2P4's and 4GB of ram from NewEgg, both boards are toast and one CPU, so I'm not so happy with NewEgg at the moment. But they've been decent in the past.

I've probably built a few hundred machines in the last 8 yrs, servers, workstations, etc, so I've got a little bit of experience I think.

And Tim, don't get so touchy when people talk about M$, I wasn't saying it was a bad thing to be in bed with Dell...

Search their site, how many results do you get at M$ for Dell??? And I guess the terms partnered and strategic alliance don't mean much aye?

Chill bro, it's all good.

Re: May buy a new \'puter soon...

Pat, you are being obnoxious. I could care less what you say about Microsoft. Really. Say what you want. You can call it M$, Microshaft, Windblows, whatever - I really, really, really, really, really could care less. I hear that stuff all the time and it really and truly doesn't bother me at all.

What I object to is the implication that you made that my recommendation about a Dell was based on some sort of nefararious pressure applied on me by Microsoft and/or Dell. When in fact, my recommendation is based on building many computers myself and having owned and used many, many computers by Compaq, Gateway, Everex, Northgate, Apple, IBM, Toshiba, eMachines, Dell, Sony, and another dozen or more companies that I can't even remember. I've had experience with every major brand for sound cards, video cards, USB ports, motherboards, etc.

As for searching the site for Dell, of course there are going to be a lot of hits - they are one of the top PC makers in the world. I have no idea how many hits you'll get. I suspect that if you search for Compaq, Apple (remember Microsoft makes some of the most popular software for the Mac), IBM, Novell, and hundreds of other companies you will also turn up a lot of hits for each of them as well. What's that got to do with anything anyhow?

I am a mac guy. I love them but I use my wifes DELL laptop at home and it has been a good computer so far. Obviously if you build one yourself it will be of better components. If you are just surfing and emailing I would go with the e machine or something along those lines. No need to bust a nut on something that you are not using for work/creative. Get a better/bigger monitor for the extra coin. You will be under your budget with that route too so you can get more gear! lol.

Come on Tim, lighten up aye? How am I being obnoxious by simply speculating why you've used so many Dell's? You said it yourself you work for M$ and you also stated your development machines for the last 8-9 yrs have been Dell's. ( And "obnoxiously" assuming you've worked for M$ for that time period ) well, why do you think that is?

I can't comment on Dell support because I didn't have to deal with them because we have a department at work that takes care of this sort of thing - I send in a service request, they come get the machine, and then I get a fixed machine back.

Excuse me? Are we flip/floppin again? And to add to that, is that why Dell has employees that work in M$ facilities? Of course I know nothing of what I'm talking about.

Dude, to set the record straight, I NEVER implied any of what you're saying, not to the extent of your post(s) go back and read your posts and mine. I merely stated you've used Dell's and there's a reason for it, in the corporate environment. I never even thought about you recommending Dell because of the corporate relationship, I stated that because you said ti yourself, it's what you've used for 8+yrs.

The bottom line, Dell uses the same parts you can buy at distributers at Pricewatch, Nextag, including NewEgg and the likes. So there's nothing magic about a Dell, you get what you pay for, no matter what you buy or from who... I personally think you can do better ( pricewise ) building one yourself.

Dude, get off me.... Seriously!

I'm with you Chris. I'm slowing migrating over to Mac as well. All of our office boxes will be Mac's by the end of 1st quarter 05 and I'm certainly a believer. We'll have a new water cooled G5 here tomorrow, can't wait.

I did some stress testing with my old G4 ( dual 1.25, 2Gb ram ) against my Alienware I use or used to use 99% of the time and the Mac just blows it away in a lot of ways.

Chuck, you may want to take a look at an iMac, or even an iBook. May be able to find a decent one on the bay...

Like I said bro, buzz me when you're ready, I may have some stuff for you, we'll get you together, plus I think I still owe you one from a few yrs back...

my PC:
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/eMach...oductDetail.do

I bought it on sale with the 17" monitor bundled in for the same price as one without it, so check your local paper. It has good hardware, but the biggest complaint is that it comes factory-installed with a ton of spyware that needs to be cleaned out.

Another selling point about the Mac, I installed Virtual PC on my Powerbook ( 1.5Ghz, 512 Ram ) It took a toal of 9 minutes to install WinXP Pro on it, start to finish... I was amazed! I'm still installing Windows Small Biz server Ent on a P4 2.0 with 2Gb of ram from last night, it's taking well over an hour to do, closer to 2 hours at this point I think, granted there's a lot of peripherals to install, but even WinXP takes a good 45 minutes to do a basic install, so if you want speed, check out a Mac bro... eMac, IMac, iBook...

( Before you twist this around, I'm only referring to the primary components, moboard, cpu and perhaps a video card.)

So tell me what seperates a Dell from any other "comparable" animal when it comes to a chassis/case?

The days of using proprietary peripherals are basically gone, sure there's a couple of them out there yet, but my understanding is that Dell is not one of these.
