Re: Petition supporting US Marine in Fallujah
These are definitely things to be considered, and I believe at least as strongly as anyone else here in the saftey of our Marines. However, even if he WAS booby-trapped, the booby trap would go off whether he was dead or alive. Shooting him at point blank range is NOT a way to disarm an explosive, trust me, explosives were my specialty. He shot the man out of vengeance. When you have an M16 drawn on someone, it is virutally impossible for them to draw a weapon and fire on you without you shooting them first. I think the man should have been kept at gunpoint until he was 100% secured against any kind of retaliation. When the people of Iraq see this footage, does it make them want to put their guns away and embrace the American troops? No, it gives them incentive to fight to the death. I understand that the insurgents are not fighting according to the Geneva Convention, but part of what makes this nation great is that we can play by the rules and take the high road even when our enemy does not. Instead of saving his own life, this boot lieutenant probably sent 500 more Muslims to pick up arms against the U.S. troops. This is not what you call "winning the hearts and minds of the Iraqui people".
At the same time I agree that he should not be simply strung up and left to dry. He had no business being in the field the day after getting shot in the face, and this is exactly the reason why.
