what is powermetal.. guys with clean vocals in very tight leaher pants who sing about thunder, lightning, swords and dragons
"I hate these filthy neutrals! With enemies, you know where they stand. But with neutrals... who knows? It sickens me!"
Well, you could start with the best power metal album from this year - Jag Panzer's "Casting the Stones".
I know "Mechanized" isn't getting it for you - other than the first two songs, it didn't really for me, either. "Casting", though, is brilliant. Trust me.

Division - American Metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on Facebook.
Hmm everything mentioned in my post is contained in the bigger list after mine lol.
If you get a chance definitely check out the first 2 Falconer albums, the singer is awesome. He sings a lot lower than most power metal, but he's actually singing unlike most metal bands...

what category would Corrosion of Conformity fall into? their earlier sh*t rocks!

Their "earlier stuff" differed greatly depending on the album.
The first album Eye For An Eye, featured Eric Eycke on vocals, and was pretty much a heavy hardcore punk album. I'm not talking about crappy pop-punk like Blink 182, and Good Charlotte either. The sound quality was atrocious, and the songs weren't much better.
The next E.P. was aptly titled Six Songs With Mike Singing. Bass player Mike Dean took over on vocals, and completely reinvented C.O.C.'s sound. The sound quality on this one is actually much better, but still a little rough. The songs are less hardcore punk here, and hint of the crossover to thrash that emerges on the next couple of releases.
Their next album, Animosity, was much heavier, and had much better sound quality. It is one of the classic crossover albums of all time. Mike Dean also sings on this one, and their next one, Technocracy, which is similar, but with a slightly less aggressive vibe.
The remaining albums are pretty much what we all know and love about C.O.C, except for the forgettable vocals of new singer Karl Agell on Blind. Mike Dean apparently left the band to join the Peace Corps, so was replaced by a new bass player Phil Swisher, and new vocalist Agell. Fortunately they booted Agell and had new guitar player Pepper Keenan take on full time vocals. Smartest thing they ever did in my opinion.
Mike Dean was back on bass for the next three albums: Deliverance, Wiseblood, and America’s Volume Dealer, each album a little more “southern” sounding than the last.
If you want to hear some of their older stuff, I recommend Animosity.
geeez I' an idiot, I thought Deliverence was their first album. Yikes my bad
deliverence and wiseblood are what I consider real "COC"
Mystic Force (Triple 6's post) is from Baltimore, played with them in the early 90's. Great drummer very talented band. Original guitar and drummer still recording from what I understand.

Bill's list has been an ongoing project for some time now. As he said, he has currently stopped at the Ss, but he has been adding to it as he worked through his massive CD collection over the last several months. NOTP referred to it in his original post when he said "I've read all of Bill's thread but his descriptions are single sentences long and not as descriptive as I would like".
Yeah I kind of figured that much. It's funny because I have a lot of the other stuff on his list, but didn't post it to keep the thread just straight power metal (and because I didn't want to spend hours typing stuff out..).
I'm too young to know what used to be called power metal. The way I define it, the genre started with Helloween's Keeper albums.

No way. Blind... best COC album ever! Karl Agell... best COC vocalist ever. He and Phil Swisher have a band called Leadfoot, and they're very cool old-school blusey rock. Their first album, Bring It On, was awesome. They've got another called We Drink For Free, which I also have, but the production on some of the songs is not that great. Not sure about any others offhand that they've done, but Karl's voice is awesome, IMO.
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.
I'm STILL laughing about Fairyland!! I see Bill omitted that one from his list. My guess is that he saw the name in a catalog and laughed for a solid hour, like I did.
Power metal, also know as nerd metal, is a combination of Iron Maiden, Dungeons and Dragons, computer games, and staying up all night drinking Jolt and discussing the finer points of a +3 sword.
I am really surprised at the outcome of my thread and the reactions I would get to starting to listen to power metal a little more.
Ace... seriously... I'm in it for the musicianship, not the nerdiness, honest! Broadening my musical horizons shall we say. Yes, that's the ticket!
When I mentioned that I was interested in fantasy themes, that wasn't a cue to mention a band called "Fairyland". I was more referring to the type of dark fantasy, sort of Iced Earth or Iron Maiden or Firewind, rather than happy-elves-go-on-a-quest-for-eternal-peace-whilst-vanquishing-the-trolls-with-the-mighty-deathsword-of-the-cloud-princess.
I suddenly feel the need to watch Lord of the Rings.
Priest- take your nerd glasses off and your metal horizons will instantly expand!
Kidding. I'm kidding! Couldn't help it.
