Re: Power metal recommendations for me?

Yep, that's me and those are some signed posters from some of my favorite bands. I listen to all sorts of music, from Motown to Pink Floyd, from Ted Nugent to Wendy Carlos. However I am a die-hard member of the U.S. death metal scene. I used to host a death metal television show, and I am personally friends with many, many brutal death metal bands. I also like heavy, heavy doom. You have to dig pretty deep to find the bands I like, bands like Incantation, Krisiun, Angelcorpse, sh!t like that. A lot of my friends that I hang around with work at Century Media and Nuclear Blast, since they are based here in Los Angeles. I also am pretty involved in the local grindcore scene, I even have a Fetus Eaters tattoo.

Alright Ace, ya busted me
Bolt Thrower is definitely NOT power metal. I just pulled up 'mercenary' again and I must agree. I associated them tangled up with Falconer since I had them in the rotation at the same time a year or two ago.
Time to put them back in anyway!

Re: Power metal recommendations for me?

I really like Bolt Thrower, I just have never heard of them called power metal before. I have heard them called grindcore before, but I don't think they're that either. I think they got the grindcore label because of the scene they came from(late 1980's England, same as Napalm Death). I think they are death metal, plain and simple. They are not terribly fast, nor chaotic, but they are good. And pretty damn heavy too!! I think Realm of Chaos is my favorite.

The power metal kinda struck a nerve ,Ace.I listen mostly to 80's metal from Priest,Maiden,Kiss and others. My likes and dislikes have changed over the years partly because of my kids and my playing skills.I guess I am just looking for something closer to what I grew up with...........

Re: Power metal recommendations for me?

BNR lists Bolt Thrower as Death Metal, however in the description find this:

"...Their sound, which has remained consistent throughout much of their career, retains elements of thrash, death metal, and grindcore (the latter of which is the term most commonly attributed to them, though the band themselves prefer to be called death metal), with lyrics often based on war themes. In addition to releasing consistently well-received albums, the band is notable for being one of a very few extreme metal bands to feature a female bass player, in Jo Bench. "

Re: Power metal recommendations for me?

I own several power metal albums. Some Kamelot, some Sonata Arctica, Rhapsody, old Fates Warning, etc. Is it nerdy? Yes. Is it cheesy? Hell yes. Metal? F*ck yeah!

The only thing about Power metal that tends to really piss me off is when people refer to the singing as "opera". I have yet to hear any Power metal bands that use actual opera singing, except for maybe Nightwish.

Re: Power metal recommendations for me?

I order from Century Media , CD Universe and The End every month ...I have over 5000+ metal cds of ALL genres..be it Power , Death , Black and so on ...to me good metal is good metal no matter what style ...

I think it is very closed minded and ignorant for one fan of a metal genre to slam another ...because there is something to learn from all ...even the likes of "Fairyland"..

I take what I like from a band like Rhasopdy ...Luca Turelli is a great player BUT the music is overkill on the epic crap IMO...but I take what I like from it and use that for my own band..same goes with cradle Of Filth and so on..

If it's good metal ..I own it...or I'm getting it!

Better yet to make things more simple for all...why don't you ASK "ME" of a certain band and I will elaborate on it more than a one sentence description...because I know I'll have it.

so ask away...

Re: Power metal recommendations for me?

OH by the way Power metal ALWAYS has "clean" vocals and is usually polished in it's perfomance and has medievil themes ...like kill the dragon ..or kill the devil ...or kill my enemy ...but with Valor and honor and a bloody sword..

Death metal does this with dirty vocals and blast beats and Black metal kills christians over a blast beat with hyper madolin guitars..and corpse paint with spike on yours arms , legs and ass

Re: Power metal recommendations for me?

In my opinion, the best Black Metal bands don't use blast beats very much, just every now and then. Playing fast is cool, but doing it all the time just kills the atmosphere. I'd like Dimmu Borgir a LOT more if they would slow things down a little more often, especially with all those symphony and samples they use . But, you know, the whole subjective thing.

Speaking of the whole medievil theme in power metal, I should mention that it is my dream to live in a castle.

Maybe I should start following this dream by purchasing this cheap little ditty. It looks so comfy.

I'd like Dimmu Borgir a lot better if they didn't sound like techno. What's YOUR take on the mighty Bolt Thrower Bill?

Yeah, it is a great song! I love those albums, too, and think Pepper's cool. He originally tried out for the vocal spot before Karl, but he brought his guitar with him, they asked him to play, then decided they wanted to have a two-guitar band, then hired Karl. I really dig Pepper's vocals, but something about Blind and Karl's voice just really moves me. I've got all their old stuff, too, and should dig that out soon. The only thing I didn't get was the live album and the newest album (I can't even remember the name of the new one).
