I believe that it may have been mentioned that way in the Goodfella's book too. I'm sure it's a popular tactic with La Cosa Nostra. That plot was also used (or more appropriately speculated) in Donnie Brasco. Though Nicholas Pileggi (who wrote both books - Casino and Wiseguy {Goodfellas}) could have borrowed from both stories.
