• Flight Sims?

Anybody here into flight sims?
Do you know of any free demo's, or where I could find them?
I'm not into the war/combat games, I just want to go flying, and it's too cold out to do it for real!

Re: Flight Sims?

There's not much of a market for any kind of flight sim anymore, it seems... sad but true. I'm partial to the combat stuff, but you might want to try getting your hands on the latest Microsoft Flight Simulator (don't know if they offer demos, though), or one of the older versions.

http://www.simhq.com/
That's a pretty good site with some reviews, and two years ago it still had healthy forums. Don't know about now, though.

--edit--
Took a quick look at M$'s site. Seems like they don't offer demos anymore. Yay...
Looks like you'll have to be lucky and find something via google or in the SimHQ Forums...

Wow Chuck...a fellow flyer eh?

I just got the most recent Microsoft Flight Sim....not bad, but they are all the same when you play with them often.

I can't wait till spring again, and get back up in an ultralight!!

Re: Flight Sims?

All it will take is one good combat sim to come out, and the market will be flooded with them again.

I haven't been into flight sims for quite some time now.

<font color="yellow">When I was with VMGRT-253 and VMA-223, I got to go in and use the actual pilot simulators once in a while when they had openings or cancellations in the flight schedule.

It was on the C-130 and AV-8B Harrier respectively.

Quite a bit of difference between the Herc and Harrier, wouldn't you say? I would love to try those sims one day and indulge my boyhood military pilot dream. Better yet, pay for a ride in a Russian fighter... Or even better! Aerial laser tag dogfighting in prop-powered planes!!!!

Ken, I got my private when I was 22 (1983...jeezus...). I don't have a whole lot of hours, but fly when I can afford it.
Of course my medicals are way out of date cause a lot has changed with me in the last couple years, but this is pretty small town up here. My Pop grew up with the guy who owns the local airport with a couple of rental 182s. Fill 'er up and $50 later, I'm outta here for a couple hours!
That's perk #1 for moving back up here...

I down loaded a demo of ProPilot99, it's pretty cool!
The big problem is flying with the arrow keys on the keyboard. It's way too easy to go into the Dipsy-Doodle from Hell!
Oh well. At least when you lawn dart straight in, you can hit escape, hit the starter and fly right out of whatever pasture you just drilled. That's cool!
I'm gonna pick up a joy stick and the real game tomorrow.

I used to really be into flight sims, back in the day. Ah, those were the days.

Very cool Chuck!
If all goes well financially for me, I may start training this summer. I have a few hours solo tooling around up in an ultralight (I had several hours of training on a Quicksilver Thunderbird).
I can't wait to get back up there....it's a whole different world where I live now, compared to where I used to go up.
I ultimately want to train in a heli also. Gotta walk before you run.

Re: Flight Sims?

My first 20 or so jumps were from a C182. Scary little crafts those are. Every time someone farts the plane changes course! Then I got my first lift on a Beech King Air, now that's a fukking ride! Mike Mullins, 14000 feet in 7 minutes, and exit at around 120 mph. I've jumped from Cessna Caravans, big old slow lazy planes they are. I remember when our DZ got a twin Otter. 30 jumpers to 14K in 15 minutes.....that was pretty cool. My most memorable was 20 of us at one time out the tailgate of a CASA at 18000 feet.
I don't know what this has to do with flight sims but it got me thinking about flying! Ya know, I've not to this day ever landed in anything smaller than a 727, although I've ridden up in many small/mid size planes. Ahhhh....he memories.
My goal in life is to be the kind of asshole my wife thinks I am.

Re: Flight Sims?

I haven't purchased a new flight sim in years. From what i see at Best Buy, Microsoft is about the only sim left.
I know you said no combat sims but Aces over Europe and Combat Flight Sim WW II Pacific theatre are great sims. They have a training area with no combat.
If I ever find myself fortunate and weathy enough I would love to own a F4U Corsair, or the F6F Hellcat. I love the old warbirds.
With over 1500 hours flying in the Lockheed P3C Orion, and 25 hours stick time (unofficially enlisted men don't pilot Navy planes...yeah right). When I got out I looked into getting my private pilot license. The local instructor took me up in a tiny Cessna. 152? I think. I have never been in a plane that bounced around so much. After he told me I would start out in one of those bug smashers I gave up the dream of being a pilot. Flying in those big 4 engine turbo props spoiled me.

Re: Flight Sims?

Turbo props do make the puddle jumpers seem awful lame, but it's better than walking. Yeah, the 152's and 182's are pretty, shall we say, lively? You don't drop your concentration for long in those. That's what makes them good trainers.

I have an old friend up here who's family runs an Air Charter service. They own two Beech Kingair 200s. Those things are a blast to fly! Great stalls! My buddy's brother is one hell of a pilot and man-handles those big birds like they're nothing!

Still, these are compact commuters compared to what you're talking about.

Sorry,I don't know of any regular flight sims, but If you do want to do some shooting check out "Pacific Fighters" from Ubisoft.(just came out) The details are excellent. The most detailed flight engine also.
