If you want an old game as well then Chrono Trigger is the way to go,it was for snes but then square released a psx version,I believe you can find it dirty cheap and it's the best squaresoft rpg imho.
Oh come on Mordor. Final Fantasy VII is Square's best, at least, imho. It's just the best RPG ever. Never have I had that much fun with a game, never will again either, it can't be topped.
screw PS2, get a real rpg for your PC like Everquest 1 or 2, World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, Dark Age of Camelot etc... FFXI sucks rotten eggs stay far away from it.
As soon as i pickup WoW, I'll be on Uther server, pacific timezone with my guildmates. Look for people in the Legion of the Dead guild. It will be written under their names just say Hi to them and tell them Ripper sent you.
eww.. EQ/WoW/DaoC/etc are NOT real RPGs.. MMORPGS are NOT RPGS.. that's like saying Linkin Park is metal. shudder
Check out Final Fantasy 6, 7, Chrono Trigger.. they're all released as PS1 (originally SNES), but repackaged as FF Anthologies for FF6 and FF5, and FF Chronicles for Chrono Trigger and FF4.. All of them are great games.. and can be picked up for 20 bucks or so each.
FFX for PS2 is pretty good..
outside of Squaresoft, Balder's Gate Dark Alliance 1/2 is pretty good. Xenosaga is long and pretty good, if you like watching movies (LOTS of cutscenes... half of the first five hours of the game are cutscenes. no joke)
My personal favorite of all time is Final Fantasy 6, followed by 7.
IMO the EverQuest type games are certainly "real RPGs"... The only difference is you interact with characters that are infinitely more realistic (they're real people afterall) and you choose the role that you play, instead of playing a role that is pre-determined by the game designers.
I don't see how an open-ended RPG is any less "real" than one with only a few (sometimes only 1) possible outcomes. IMO there is no substitute for human to human interaction. But to each his own, I suppose.
That was my slightly off-topic RPG rant. Carry on!
