• Had a little accident

Well my thanksgiving weekend just went down the drain. Tonight we took the triplets to Liberty Lake to look at the Christmas lights. On the way back home on a twisty Va. two lane Rt.122, I slammed into a F'ing deer. Everyone is fine except my 2004 suburban.
It had just started raining there was a car behind me, two cars approaching me in the other lane. I saw three deer leap over a barbwire fence about 15 to 20 feet in front of me, I hit the brakes, I couldn't swerve because of the oncoming cars on one side and the deep ditch on the other. I hit the lead deer. The oncoming cars saw it and slowed down. The car behind me never became a factor. I was able to keep the burban in my lane and miss the other two deer somehow.
That bitch (doe) took out my driver side daytime running light and front signal light. The entire light bezel shattered. The bumper appears to be slightly bent down. The wheel has several hair samples for DNA analysis (that way we can see if she was breeding under the influence) trapped between it and the tire. Somehow it missed the fender slamming into my door leaving a basketball sized dent. It hit the door so hard that it pulled the upper door out creating a nice air leak.
Having worked in the autobody field, I already know I going to have to fight to have the door replaced. They will only want to replace the door skin.
The state trooper told me he had worked 40 deer hits the previous week. I hate the rutting season. We have had to many mild winters, and no extended hunting seasons around here that the Deer population is out of control.
I did my part this year, I got one.

Two Words: Deer Whistles.

1: Where I live the deer are thick as summer flies. I watch deer running AWAY from the road almost every night on the backroads I travel. The whistles work.

2: The local bodyshop has deer hits in the lot all the time. I was talking with the owner and asked him what he thought about deer whistles. He said, "I've never had a deer hit come in that had whistles on it."

All three cars/trucks in my household have them.

Had two close calls tonight. Once was so close that if we were in the Buick with its ABS system, we would have hit it.

Chuck, Got to disagree on the deer whistles. They are like anything else, deer eventually get used to them. we have a bodyshop at work and a large portion of our work is deer hits. about half of the cars come in with those whistles on them. I think there are so many cars running around with them on that the deer just get used to them. I had a neighbor that had problems with deer eating the vegatables in his garden, so he put a radio going 24/7 in the garden, the deer eventually got used to the radio, came back in and started munching veggies again. Those whisltes were useful for a short while, but they dont stop deer hits now. I have written damage estimates myself when my our estimator is on vacation and I have seen alot of deer hits with whistles.

Mudkicker, glad you and everyone are OK. There isnt much yoiu can do in that situation but what you did. metal and plastic can be replaced, people cant.

Whistles don't work.
It could have been worse, your SUV could have looked like this guys.

Do you have a deer guard on your Suburban? Wouldn't have saved your door, but it probably would have helped prevent the other damage.

On the highway near my late grandfather's ranch in Wyoming, deer hits used to be an everyday occurance because the local deer population's favorite breeding grounds were on the other side of the highway from their main area of habitation. In that area, it was almost mandatory to have a deer guard if you didn't want the front end of your truck to get smashed up every year. And, of course, in that part of the country almost everyone drives a truck. Definitely a "red state"...

Re: Had a little accident

You guys saying whistles don't work, answer me this: Why do the deer look up and run away as I approach? Is it my deodorant?

Tone, perhaps they will eventually get used to them, but I wonder how many hits I will have avoided till then?

Pulverizer, for the $6 I spent on the whistles, I think I'll gamble that you're wrong. They are staying.

Re: Had a little accident

I'll post pics of the damage later today. My old 98 Suburban had a guard on the front of it. We wanted to buy one for our new Suburban but I have been putting it off. I told my wife that as soon as we had our suburban repaired I was going to get the guard and install it.
Looking at that Durango we got off very easy. While I am pissed that my new Suburban has been damaged, I am more than happy with the fact that no one was hurt.

Re: Had a little accident

Chuck, I just know from my experience at work that there are alot of deer hits that come in and have whistles on them, I have seen them with my own eyes. and I have driven/riden in vehicles with deer whistles and I have never seen a deer take off running when I went by. So maybe it is your deordorant that makes the deer run....or lack of deodorant just kiddin
I have always thought those whistles were a gimmick. To each his own though , if they work for you, by all means man, use them. Maybe we just have retarded deer up here and they dont know enough to run from the whistles.

As someone who lived in VA for 28 years, I can attest to Deer Whistles. My Ex's Mother (Ex mother in law? ) made me put those on after a Deer Crash, and the Deer did indeed start Running away after I installed 'em.
+1 for Deer Whistles

Re: Had a little accident

For some reason, deer whistles are controversial. Some people swear by them, some people swear they don't work. Perhaps they are only effective on east coast deer...who knows?

I guess my thought process goes like this: It's pretty well impossible to prove either way (the body shop here has NO whistle equipped hits), and you don't see the deer till it's way too late most of the time. If they make ONE deer turn away from the road and you drive right by, they're worth the $6. That's all I'm sayin. With that idea in mind, I cannot fathom why people don't just try them! It's not like they are expensive or permanent or...there are no negatives I can think of to having them on the vehicle!

First, glad all is OK with you and the family bro...

I have numerous deer that live right here as well, I see them 3-4 times a week at night and early in the am as well. ( when I'm out ) There's also dozens and dozens of turkey as well.

Anyway, about thsoe pix linked above with the Durango, I don't see how the deer hit the top like that, caused all that damage and landed through the windshield in perfect place as though he just "jumped" through the windshield...

Just my opinion of those, I know you didn't take them, but I'm not buying it.

Story said it was belived that the deer had lept or was knocked off of an overpass and landed on the top of the Durango. Seems plausable...

I've seen deer jump pretty far across roadways when jumping in front of me, I'd say it could happen pretty easily.
