I like the new album too. The only thing i don't like about them is some of the really really long intro's they have to songs. I don't like long intro's at all, like in Obituary's 'slowly we rot'

Really. I don't watch MTV at all and I'm really surprised that they get any airtime. Must be because the singer is bone material.

I believe he's referring to MTV Europe. MTV over here in America certainly wouldn't play Nightwish, unless they made a dramatic left turn to become a bunch of thug rappers...
To me, Wishmaster is by far the best album that Nightwish have done. Once is a pretty good album, but I prefer the more operatic approach that Tarja used to take on vocals. Also, there's a creeping tendency toward sappy balladry on the last couple of albums. On the other hand, Marco Hietala's raucous vocals have added a nice counterpoint to Tarja's singing.
They haven't played the Washington DC area yet, but if they do I will definitely check them out.
Count me in as a fan. They are great for when I am in the mood for heavy music with some atmosphere. I definitely enjoy Tarja's operatic vocals and I feel they fit well with the music. That being said, I like their first three albums (Angels Fall First, Wishmaster, Oceanborn) better than their two recent albums (Century Child, Once). The later two are a bit more polished (not like the first three are un-polished, though), but the first three have more "mojo" for me and feel more creative.

have you been at the gig in vosselear on november 9th? I wanted to see them opening for nightwish the day before in Amsterdam, but that was sold out, so I went to belgium to see SA as headliner... it quite rocked
i like the band, but think tarja's over rated...she doesn't vary her singing much (although i do agree once is her best work). i think once is their best work...after hearing "real" orchestration instead of just generic keyboards, its hard to go back to the other albums...

Absolutely agree, and I will go even further and say that their latest two albums totally suck. What makes (or made) Nightwish special is Tarja's voice combined with the guitar riffs and solos. When they took in Marco from Sinergy and let him influence the song writing, and even worse, SING, they ruined everything. Their first three albums are really great. The pre-Marco era kicked ass. They suck now. IMHO, of course

Although I like the first three albums better, I'm the total opposite about Marco's work. His bass-playing is more muscular-sounding, and I think his vocals work very well in the band as a counterpunch to Tarja. The problem seems to be the songwriting. And I think that Tuomas the keyboardist still does all the writing in Nightwish. I will say, however, that the writing on Once is better than on Century Child--the Once songs really 'open up' to you after a few listens.
The problem with the last 2 Nightwish albums for me is the guitar parts. I think they are way too boring and especially on "Once" the guitar is very nu-metal. That being said, I have seen them live twice already and have tickets to see them in Toronto soon. I also will DEFINITELY buy tickets to see them with Sonata Arctica, since I doubt those guys will be in North America again anytime soon.
