Re: What kind of vehicle should I get?

We bought our Grand Cherokee from Lou Fusz I believe, in Fairview. we haggled and haggled, but I've got nothing bad to say about them personally.

Let me know how it goes...

Dealer invoice pricing information on all new cars is available here:

        Edmunds.com

...and don't forget to check the dealer incentives and rebates section, for the secret stuff Krista and other dealer won't tell you about ...

On the Escape, we have had one for a few years. No problems at all. Great SUV. Just make sure you get the V6, as the 4 banger is anemic. It's a champ in the snow, too. Personally, I wouldn't buy a Subie, as their reliability records ain't the greatest. It's your dime, though.

Thanks for the info. As far as the reliability on the Subaru's, really? I've heard nothing but good things about them. I've got a buddy who has an Outback and loves it, never had a problem. Tell me more.

I forgot to apologize for semi-hijacking Travis' thread. Sorry.

After checking Edmunds, it seems that "Customer Cash Adjusted True Market Value = $18,980" for the model we were looking at. That is exactly what they had on the sticker. Edmunds listed the National Base Price invoice as $19,685. Whose got some advice from here?

I would skip all those sites and just buy the car you like. Life is too short to waste it driving a car you dont like, just because other people claim its reliable, or what not.............All cars are crap, just pick out the one you like best. I expect nothing from my car, and it has never disapointed me............

Damn!!!!!!!! That's quite a recall! And ummm, quite a concern.

I had that happen to me once, I was in a Dodge Colt about 15 yrs ago. Nothing major to report, but I had to chase the wheel down a rather large drop off into a creek, I was only doing about 30 tho, which probably saved me from dropping off. I took one lug from each of the other wheels and I think I ended up driving it like that for several months...

For you St. Louis guys, it was on Von Talge going from Theiss towards Lindbergh ( In south county off Mattis/ Cardinal Springs ). Kind of a windy road to say the least. A fun road tho, back in the day!

you can search for rebates/incentives and find those, but you cant find the dealer cash....hehehe

                          [/ QUOTE ]

Think again. Go to that website and put in your zip code, and it will tell you ALL incentives, including the "hidden" manufacturer-to-dealer holdbacks. Kelly's Blue Book site will do the same.

And don't settle for the average sale price info. That "average" includes the chumps who don't do any pricing research and take it up the @ss. You can and should do better than that.

On the Subies, I can say with confidence that I have had friends who've had troubles. It's been a while - maybe they've improved, maybe not. But my sense is they are vehicles with under-engineered powertrains. Will it be a POS? Probably not. Will you have troubles? Maybe. Subura is not exactly at the top of the list for quality. I'd go with a Ford, Honda, or Toyota before them any day.

And the first person who throws up a JD Power "quality" survey gets: If you follow the fine print, JD Power's rankings are based on initial quality. i.e., Only the first year of ownership or so, when almost NOTHING goes wrong anyway! Worthless info., IMHO. But the auto industry loves JDP, because it minimizes the TGW ratings ("things gone wrong") and makes for great PR. That is, unless it's a total POS. Well, I just went and drove an '03 Honda Element and an '03 CRV. They share the same engine, drivetrain, etc. so they were pretty similar. Apparently, when they came out with the Element, all they did was put a different shell around the CRV platform. Anyway, I actually really liked the Element. I would prefer a manual transmission, but I can find one of those. Plus, Hondas are known for being ultra reliable. It looks like I'll have to throw one of those into the mix.

If you get a chance, check out a Mazda Tribute. Same thing as a Ford Escape, but a little bit pricier. However, Mazda recently went up to a 4 year B-T-B warranty, whereas Ford (...and most other companies) only has 3. So it's like that little bit of extra $ is buying you an extra year on the warranty. Again, V6-equipped only, though.

Alternatively, if you can live with a wagon, they just introduced a wagon version of the Mazda 6. Killer car - I have the sedan version. V6 only again!

I had a good friend of mine who got his wife an Escape and they had nothing but problems with it. In fact, I think they got rid of it in ledd than a year. My dad has had two Explorers that had major problems with them before it was "due." So, Ford just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. But, thanks a lot of the suggestions. I really appreciate it.
