I have the most useless degree ever: Liberal Arts AA! Working on a BA in History, essentially wasting the gov'ts money. Then it's off to luthier's school.

Re: what kind of degree do you have?

My degree was medically with-held. I had the grades, but not the hours requirement.

My case is interesting, in that I'm a highschool dropout. Not by choice, but rather by chance. I'll explain. I've had several surgeries, and in our school district, excuses are accepted for medical absenses, however it counts as one day per excuse.

My Dr. wrote my excuses in groups, rather than just having me off for weeks at a time on one excuse.

Well 12th grade comes, I take my SATs and score 1256, I'm excited, because I don't come from money, and I can probably get a lot of my college paid for. Well shortly after (more bad luck) I get called into the guidance counselors office.

She said that since I missed the better part of 2 years of school, and was home schooled for a year, that I'd have to take 3 years worth of classes again. Okay, not a problem because it would only be English, since in our district English is the ONLY class you have to take 9th 10th 11th and 12th grade, the rest in 12th are electives, and make ups for anything.

So I was like, I can make up this this this and this, and go to summer school for this, she's like, no because in order to have a certain class, you have to have the pre-requisite. I never had Pre-Algebra, or Algebra 1, so that means my Geometry, A.P. Trig, A.P. Algebra 3, A.P. Algebra 2 were all bullshitt credits.

In essence, I would have had to take ALL my maths, 4 English, and the gym that I missed due to my surgeries. I asked infront of the school board if we could have this ammended, and my Dr. was present, and they said, no.

I personally believe it was a result of a suicide attempt I tried that very year, because it's funny, the week I come back, this all happened.

I went over to my career person at the Vo-Tech (my cert was going to come from there, and then I was going to go to Penn-State to further my degree.) She recomended that I drop out, and go to college as a secondary student, because I will still get accepted at most colleges even with a GED.

I scheduled my GED test, I scored 299 of 300, and I did the test in 3.5 hours over 2 days. It's scheduled for 8 hours over 2 days.

Many of you will probably look down on me for my dropping out, because it's something I deal with every day. It's funny, I can get away without putting my education on a job resume, but personal doubt keeps me from applying to many jobs, that's why the union is something that appealed to me. Most of their organizers are rank and file members before they are organizers, and you are not required to possess a degree, if you have good leadership skills, and qualities.

Sorry to rant, but every once in awhile, the whole, I'm a drop out bothers me, and I look back everyday, and I'm very upset that I didn't get my electronics degree. I can put it on an resume that I was in school for it, and for the degree part, I have to put "Medically Witheld" Makes for an interesting conversation.

Re: what kind of degree do you have?

Sorry to hear about your problems Deneb, that's really a drag. But I think you're misattributing interview difficulties to your GED when that really doesn't have much to do with it. I've been on the other side of the interview desk representing both ultra-massive multinationals and my own business and I can tell you for a fact that the story you related above would prevent me from hiring you but not for the reason you think.

Upon hearing your story I would believe it likely that you'd miss a ton of work and be a massive drain on my health care plan. I'd envision having to hire temps to fill in for you while you recuperated, the potential for workplace accidents on those days when you weren't feeling well but came in anyway, and having to pay you unemployment because I'd believe that eventually I'd have to let you go for being absent frequently. Then of course would come the inevitable lawsuit over the circumstances of your termination. Lawyers being generally scum, juries being generally sympathetic, and you demonstrating (above) a very typical litigious mindset I'd also be thinking about the cost of settling that (cheaper than litigating). In sum while you were dishing out the story of how the world hasn't been fair to you (welcome to the club) I'd be envisioning: skyrocketing medical insurance premiums, cash costs of temps to fill in for you during long recovery periods, lost productivity of bringing in temps to fill your job, rising workman's comp rates, paying unemployment benefits, and the eventual cost of your termination and the lawsuit that might well follow. And that's before I consider the cost of bringing in your replacement which is also far from free.

So let me do a very large disservice to the business community in the United States and suggest a better way to handle the situation. When asked why you didn't finish high school reply, "Because it was boring," and then make some **** up (some **** that absolutely cannot be independently verified but which sounds interesting). For example, "I thought that spending a year backpacking around Europe would be more educational than sitting in a dull classroom and as my exceptional GED score indicates, there wasn't much more for me to learn there anyway." That forecloses questions surrounding your GED (particularly when backed by your solid SAT score), puts you in an interesting light, and prevents your coming off as a whiny hypochondriac that'll likely be a huge drain on the business's assets.

I went to the Guitar Craft Academy here at MI in Hollywood. It was a six month course. In a weeklong course, you would probably learn really useful information about tuning, setups and basic repairs, but I don't think they let you build a guitar in a week.

I certainly don't look down on you--it sounds like you made the right choice. Our public schools are too full of bureaucratic bullsh!ttery, and your situation is a prime example. I can understand why you would have to fulfill certain course requirements in order to graduate, but haven't these morons ever heard of "placement tests"??? In other words, they should have had you take tests to determine your knowledge level and slotted you in the appropriate course, rather than mechanically making you take the entire math sequence, which was obviously unnecessary given your performance on the GED test.

I don't follow your story entirely, however. You say that you have problems with employers--have you gone to college after you got your GED, or are you not going to do that now? Once you have a college degree (particularly in a technical field), most employers couldn't give a sh!t about what you did in high school. The college degree speaks for itself.

Hey Jimmy B actually I got arrested for something I didn't do when I was 18 I just fit the description of the guy, they caught the actual person but I had an arrest on my record for a major fellony so it kept me out even thought the case was settled. The F.B.I. is very strict.

Re: what kind of degree do you have?

No what I mean, (and I apologize if I typed it wrong) is I have personal inhibitions against the interviews. Anytime I'm in an interview, I do extremely well, I'm well spoken, and even if I've not displayed them here, I've got excellent people skills.

Yet another one, my medical problems are solved, and there will be no need for any surgery, or lost time to replace it (I couldn't walk for quite sometime due to a physical injury that has been corrected, and I'm 100% in better shape, actually, I'm in 200% better than before, because I wanted to walk normal, without a limp and worked my ass off).

The whole job thing, I'm just fearing the rejection. The employer would look at my resume and see GED and pass right over it, or during the interview, I would mention I had a GED and be frowned upon for it.

Like I said, the union jobs appealed to me, because most organizers are rank and file, and you look more at the person, than their education.

So, no it hasn't affected me at an employer yet, it just makes me doubt myself.

I have a BA in sociology which means I am qualified to work in social service fields that pay less money per year than what my tuition was. As for the GED thing, GED's are becoming more and more common and accepted by employers. There are a million reasons why someopne would have gotten a GED instead of a diploma-medical problems, legal issues (either committing crimes or being victimized) loss of credits due to transfers if you moved around alot, addiction or mental health issues, etc. Basically, if it is acceptable to a college, it is acceptable to an employer.
