    Re: First band practice yesterday...

are you serious, Ninja? I improv a Lot, so to actually get me to write a song with the Whole band and not just myself, is a tough process. too many ideas, too many times the "song" gets changed, lol!

I am far from a perfectionist. I **** up all the time, play too fast, play something that sounds like total ass, forget where I am in the song. But that's only during the writing phase. And that's because I am not afraid to take chances. As long as your not playing live, there is always a second take. Where do you think Led Zepplin would have gone if Jimmy Page was afraid to try something new?

As far as improv with the band, the drummer and I have almost a telepathy. We grind it out, then we look at each other, nod, and break down, or blast, or groove, or whatever. Half the shit we wrote Saturday was just lost unto the ether. We'd finish the song we were playing, then just keep on going, making new shit up. Then the singer would be like "**** YEAH!! Tell me you recorded that!!"

And I'd awnser "Nope, that song is off in the ether now. Offered to the Gods of Metal for their own enjoyment."

Improvising is never a problem for me. I can do it with the best of them. But, I suck at actually taking that stuff and just putting it in a song, as is. I'm a minimalist, and I've had that habit for a while now. Need to break it.

A mentor of mine who's pretty good at drums used to improv with me a lot. I'd usually go over to his place and start playing some grindcore type thing, and he'd just join right in, and we'd later act amazed at just how much time flew by. Man, that was a lot of fun.
