• Sick of playing...

No, I'm not giving up guitar, turning "rap", selling any of my gear or anything like that. But the last week or so I've been playing HOURS every day trying to get TWO bands off the ground at the same time, both of which I write for. After playing hours and hours a day, my fingertips are a little sore, and just looking at the guitar seems like something of a chore. Anyone ever get bogged down by they playing they have to do? I'm not discouraged or anything, just a little fatigued. I know it will pass. Anyways, I think I am going to give it another shot right now...

Oh , we all go thru that noise...Hell I wish my fingers can get "sore" they are totaly "dead" ....feels like I'm playing with mittens on and yes sometimes it sounds like it too.

Put it down and pick it up when "inspired" ..

A lot of the "greats" don't play everday ...or every week for that matter...

you know how to play ...put it down and wait for when you get the bug to play..

When I try to play everyday ...it's gets very old ...I go thru the same crap over and over again without thinking of anything "fresh" to play ...so I'll put it down ..walk away until I get and idea from listening to a cool song or on my own...

    you know how that is..

    You'll be fine.

Take a break bro-Go do something else you enjoy(at least for a night if you have band obligations), non music related. Catch a flick, go out to dinner, get laid...whatever just something to get you thinking about something new. I think we all go through ups and downs. I take breaks from playing when I am getting bored-

Sometimes a new piece of gear helps to-even if its just a cheap chorus pedal or something . Sometimes getting away from the same sound can bring new ideas.

And of course theres always just getting tanked-kinda like a reboot

Maybe you need to break up the jam sessions with some luthier work....like on a King V or a Rand.

I'm getting pretty sick of playing too. I've learnt Collorado Bulldog by Mr Big. I can play everything apart from the very first lick, the stretches are just too much, i can't get any strength behind it and it sounds messy. I've been practicing it for months now and still i can't stand to play it. Worst of all, i've got to play the damn thing in front of people at college today

Definitely set the guitar in the case for a few days and don't even look at it. Your fingers won't be sore, and you might find that playing so much wasn't as inspirational as leaving it alone.

Not playing is not an option. I'll be just fine. I need to get the song from last week down perfect, and write a new one by Saturday. That's my goal.

                  Re: Sick of playing...

Burn out of playing in and managing a band caused me to look at my bass as a job, which in turn caused me to walk away from it for a LONG time. My advice is to be very careful of burnout, it can cause you to think and act irrationally about something you love to do. I never play when I feel like a have to, only when I want to and I play more now then I ever did. Everyone is different but I have lived through burnout with more than one thing I loved to do. Good Luck bro.

Ace, I find Jaegermeister to be very inspirational and takes care of the sore fingertips as well. Also, those new inside-out Recees cups are pretty good.

If you don't already have one, pick one guitar that no matter when you pick it up or for how long or short a time you pick it up, it's always got something to say, and put it in the case for a week. Take it out and see what it has to say.

I leave my Les Paul Standard in the case for that very reason. Whenever I pick it up, I create new stuff, or make stuff I'm currently working on seem better, especially if I'm stuck in a rut.

All the others I leave out and play almost all the time but it's all just noodling and farting around - nothing "special", just practice.

Well I practice everyday, but I'm not writing or in a band. I never get tired of it, but my hands are sore just about every day. I'm still trying to get my technique and theory up to a reasonable point. Besides, how many power metal bands have you heard of from the suburbs of Detroit? Just a bunch of "hardcore" or whatever they call it around here.

I do this one quite often. All my guitars have something to say, or they get thinned from the herd sooner or later. I have my two or three that I play all the time. Then one day I'll just grab one off the wall I haven't played in a few weeks and she and I will dance for hours!! Great advice Newc!!

OK, I talked to my drummer and we figured it out, we are going to bump practice up to 2-3 times a week!! I look forward to it. I was justired when I made the first post. I had been up all night helping my friend put together her art gallery for a show yesterday, and I didn't feel like doing much ANYTHING at all. I still played for awhile last night, and today it's back to the grind!!
