  • Re: RIP Dime

I just woke up on my own floor. I was drinkin' Jack in Dime's name.

Jim, I feel ya on the wantin' someone else to host the Dimebag special. Dave had harsh words for Dimebag, just the same as it seems he has for everyone else. However, Dave has pretty much eaten his words, just like everyone else who had a chip on their shoulder left by Dime. I think that Dave Mustaine appreciates the seriousness of this situation, and like just about everyone else in metal, will take this opportunity to bring us together. Anyone too much closer to the band(Rex, Phil, Zakk and especially Vinnie) are probably still too shaken up to do it. While there is probably someone else who would have been a better choice, I trust Dave to do his best to pay tribute to Dimebag.

Ya know...I still can't sleep. Everytime I think about him now I wanna pick up my guitar, which is what I'm going to do now (hell, its 2 in the AM, might as well do something useful). And quite honestly, that's the best damned thing any of us can do to really honor him. Even where he is now I'm sure he'll inspire a new generation of shredders to rip it up for years to come. That's one of the best things I think a person can leave behind...inspiration

In shell shock for the last 24+ hours over this enormous loss to the rock guitar community and metal world. Dime had a unique style and persona that leaves a lasting impression. From what I know, he was a really down to earth guy that wasn't spoiled by his success. Feel especially bad for Vin. God bless and pray for his family and friends during this time of sadness and need.

Scott Ian would have been a much better choice to host the special. A roadie for Pantera would have been a better choice than Mustaine.

OK. It's happened. It's been 24 rough hours for me, and tonight I did it. I cried. Fukk, I'm still crying. I've finally let it hit home. I'm a thick skinned mother-for-ya. After my time in the USMC, having friends die, family die, life has dealt me a lot of sh!tty hands. But I've kept a straight, even smiling face. I've looked death in the eye and laughed and walked away. But this isn't me we're talking about. This is someone else. My worst dreams are the ones where someone I care about gets hurt. Dimebag was one of my childhood heros, and after today my life will never be the same. I've spent the last 24 hours glued to the internet looking for, and finding, sympathy with my metal brothers who feel the same as I do. We may be spread far apart on the map, but it's things like the JCF and Dimebag that bring us together so that we don't feel so alone in this big world.

Scott Ian would be the perfect host for this tribute. Who's the genius making the call at BET - ahem MTV!

I agree. Plus, why fly Mustaine out here? Scott can just take the F train to the studio

Well, I haven't really been able to put into words how I feel. Just can't sleep tonight so I guess I'll give it a shot. This is another in a long series of events that goes to show just how fu(ked up this country is getting.

Most of you guys know that I always have been a Dean guy and was playing Dean's back before production Charvels were even being made. Being here in Oklahoma, we were close enough to Darrell down in the Dallas area to have his band travel up into Okla. and play WAY before anybody knew who the hell Pantera was. When Pantera's "Projects in the Jungle" first came out around 1983 I saw this wild album cover with a guy playing a Cherryburst Dean ML exactly like the one I had custom ordered and was playing at the time. I bought the album solely for that one reason. From that day I was hooked on Pantera. I have been a HUGE fan for many years BEFORE Cowboys From Hell and still consider "Power Metal" to be one of the top albums ever produced by anyone. I have all the original Pantera albums on Dime and his family's Pantego Records label. Those albums were all well worn out well before CFH. His progression on the years was amazing with the first album "Metal Magic" sounding like Kiss. Then "Projects in the Jungle" where he started developing his own style. Then "I Am the Night" where Pantera really nailed the power metal style of music and then finally with the addition of Phil and the "Power Metal" CD which defined the term......... all very un-CFH-like.

Darrell was always poking around my area competing with me on buying up vintage Deans from local pawnshops. I remember back in 1989 negotiating with a local pawn shop on a deal to buy 3 vintage USA Deans they had and arguing over the final $50. When I came back the next day to get the guitars, Dime had already beaten me to them and bought them all up.

R.I.P. dude, you will be remembered always.

May he rest in peace knowing he affected so many in a positive way. My condolences go out to all affected by this.

Also let us remember the others slain in this unspeakable act. Those who were there for a evening of entertainment and KILLED needlessly at such a young age (I believe 23 and 25). The world may have lost another guitar god that was yet undiscovered in one or both of these deaths. On a personal level I am very afraid for the world that we are leaving for my son and his yet to be born sibling along with all of the other children out there. For those of you that pray please do so for the families of the victims and also for the rest of us in the hope that this world we live in will become a better place.

I wish they picked someone else. It sucks having a guy who over the years referred to Dimebag as "Douchebag Darrell" presenting such an important rememberance.

[/ QUOTE ]Well, quite a few of us were criticizing him for the Krank ad with the bag of weed a couple days ago, or suggesting Ron kick his ass at NAMM. Seeing that Darrellwas such a good-natured guy, would he want us fighting over who hosts the tribute? The perfect guy would be Zakk Wylde, but he is probably not up to it, and that applies to Scott Ian too quite possibly. If Dave Mustaine of all people has enough remorse and humility toeat his words and do this, well I think Darrell would have forgiven the Douchebag remarks. He may have even laughed at them in life.Personally, even though he probably meant nothing by it,Phil Anselmo's remarks about taking out Darrell easily, and that his fans would do anything he said, are in my mind more likely to have triggered this lunatic than anything recent. Phil probably never intended it, and I'm sure he's in pain right now, but if he'd kept his fukking mouth shut we might not be mourning right now. Ihope he thinks about that shit for the rest of his life because I do feel he may have egged this on. He deservesto be in pain, unlike everyone else involved.
                          Ron is the MAN!!!!

True Rich, But every interveiw you see with Phil, he's usually so fuckin' inebriated (sp?) that I doubt he even remembers half of the shit he spews about people. He once referred to Darrel (in an interveiw shortly after Pantera announcing their breakup) that he thought of him as a brother...they fought like brothers, but that he would still give his life for him. Yeah...he'll be feeling this for the rest of his life.

Man, I woke up this morning thinking about this. I'm trying to explain to my wife what this means. How could something so senseless happen to one of the most down to earth people in the music business. Dime was Dime, no doubt about it. It seems he has been in all the guitar mags recently and I've enjoyed every interview and commentary about him.

I think I wore out my CFH tape when it came out. That album is a classic for all time.

Back in '92 I believe, me and Gary Powell here on the board went to see JP in Dallas. We were on the 7th or 8th row center, and the row in front of us was empty. Then during Alice Cooper, this entourage of metal chics and metal dudes came in and sat down in front of us. Nobody recognized them, but Gary and I knew it was Pantera. They were cool as hell. We were closer to Vinnie and if I remember right. He told us they were hanging out backstage with JP and came out to see Alice's stage show. After a while people started to realize who they were and they headed back stage. Totally cool metal moment, I wish I remembered more of it.

The last time I saw them live was on the Southern Trendkill tour in Dallas. Incredible, fans on the floor were lighting their shirts on fire and throwing them around. My buddy and I were up in the seats enjoying the show and watching the mayhem. Dime was awesome. I remember wishing I was on the floor in front of Dime so I could watch him, but I wasn't brave enough to try it.

I pray I'll see you again man...

This was the top news story here in Dallas on last nights 10pm news. The were referring to him as a guitar legend and heavy metal hero. They had so many fans show up at Darrell's house to show respect, leave flowers, gifts, notes and whatnot that they had to have cops out there to direct traffic.
This is really a tragedy and what makes it even worse is that everyone who has ever had contact with him has nothing but nice things to say about him. How he loved his fans, would spent time talking to them like they were his best buds, giving them passes, tickets and t-shirt, showing them his stage set-up, partying and just having fun. He lived a life style we all wish we could have, playing music, touring and remaining a kid at heart without conforming to society's definition normality for a 38 year old man.

God Bless you Darrell may you rest in peace..
