Ya know, I've been reading all these posts for a few days and there are few things that stand out, at least for me. Obviously, I'm in the underwhelming majority here, but FWIW - I was never into either of his bands, his persona, and his playing certainly didn't set my world on fire...I always kind of viewed Pantera as one step from ending up on Stewarts shirt in Beavis and Butthead...

The flip side is, that it's a no brainer that he obviously touched alot of people, and the circumstances behind this are a complete total mindf*ck for a musician or any human into anything at all. It's not like he pulled a dumbass Cobain and did it to himself. Just horrific - and really hard to digest and accept. It's tweaked me in a wierd way more from the human aspect than the Dimebag connection - it could've been anyone.

That said - please remember he was not the only one who passed, and that sons, brothers, friends and possibly Dads of others are no longer here as a result - and there's not really been a mention of any of that in a thread a few hundred posts deep. I really respect the rally around Dimebag - but don't forget that he was only one of a few who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

          RIP all involved.

I know what you mean Steve. I didn't think this would have as big of an impact on me as it has. I really feel like I lost a family member and I really wasn't a big Pantera fan, its pretty strange and I can't explain it. I have yet to hear anyone have anything but a positive experience in meeting Darrell. He really was a cool guy, very down to earth, made whoever he talked to feel like a friend and he had no rock star ego. He went out of his way to meet his fans and to make them feel comfortable being around him.

I wasn't into Pantera very much and got away from them when the vocals became less melody inspired but after this tragedy, I have decided to learn 'Cemetery Gates" just as a tribute to Dime.

Here is Pantera live doing "Cemetery Gates" to show what kind of player Dime really was. Thank to David (442w30) for helpon a brutha out with that mp3.

Speed monkey, I believe for than a handful of people have mentioned that our sypathies are with the other victims and their families.

The fact is though, while many of us did not know Darrell in a best buddy kind of way, we knew him a lot more than we knew the other poor victims, and therefore grieve harder.

Also, the way in which they died, while no less tragic, is perhaps less bitter in a way. They were unfortunates who happened into the line of fire. Darrell on the other hand was the target. This miscreantshot him point blank in the face, multiple times. He was executed, and for no other reason than he was doing what he loved, and doing it better than most of us could dream of.

Please don't think less of us because we mourn harder for our hero than we do for the others.

                  Hey Zeegler -

Would never think anything less of any of you guys. I understand and agree with your points...the other thing to consider is that if not for Darrel - the fans wouldn't have been there, and if not for the fans, Darrel would not have been able to be there.

Bottom line is it's really messed up...I can't imagine being there when it happened. RR was the Hero of my time, and his ordeal didn't need to happen either. We're all better people for the influences both these guys had on us respectively, and everybody grieves in their own way.

Dunno if this was posted or not, but here's some words from Phil's friend, supposedly from Phil.

PHILIP ANSELMO On DIMEBAG DARRELL: 'The Best Of The Best' - Dec. 11, 2004

Philip Anselmo's (SUPERJOINT RITUAL, DOWN, ex-PANTERA) friend "J" has posted the following message on the official DOWN forum in regards to the tragic death of DAMAGEPLAN/ex-PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott:

"I don't have a big official statement. I do have a lot of inside knowledge on the PANTERA feud from Philip's side and tonight he gave me the green light to let everyone else in on what I know. He trusts me to do this, and I take 100 percent responsibility for anything that is inaccurate, but I'm confident you all know I'm not going to touch on this subject unless it's from the heart. He didn't even give me any specifics except for the final part of this post... he just wants me to tell people what I know to be true.

"Philip loved Darrell like a brother, always. They accomplished things together that most wouldn't even dare to dream. None of us can know what it's like to be riding such a big machine, it changes the face of music and brings joy millions of people's lives around the globe. The rewards are big, but the stress is unimaginable if things don't go perfectly. Yes, PANTERA broke up and there was a lot of shit-talking through the media. There are two people on this board who would periodically ask me about what's going to happen with PANTERA in the future. I told them each time that I don't know when, but I'm 100 percent sure that we will see PANTERA together again. I told them that when PANTERA does get back together, you will know somebody who never lost faith, not for a second. Why did I tell them this? Because I know Philip loves those guys and when he was ready, he would reach out to them and try to make it work again. I had the feeling that one morning (afternoon maybe), all the 'Cowboys From Hell' boys would just roll out of the rack and say 'Let's go!'

"Of all the time I've spent with Rex and Philip, I never badgered them about PANTERA, but the subject did come up every once in a while. As for Rex, he would refer to the state of things simply as 'silly nonsense.' All I ever got out of Philip was something like 'Nyaaaa... I just don't feel like sitting down and writing PANTERA riffs right now.' ... and that's it! No crazy accusations, name-calling, or carrying on. As a matter of fact, in the middle of all the heat, Philip described Vinnie as 'the perfect drummer' and that Vinnie could drum more perfect than a drum machine if he so chose. What he said of Dime, he also repeated tonight. 'The best of the best.'

"It's sad that the media would irritate the situation so much. Countless times, Kate and I would listen in on Phil doing interviews. Always, always, always, the jackals wanted PANTERA dirt. Sometimes Philip would give it to them, sometimes he would not. However every single time I was there, he expressed his love for, and wished luck to Vinnie and Dime but that was somehow left out of the final print more times than not. I was at Philip's house a few weeks ago and I informed him that I handle the official PANTERA site now, and he asked me if I talked to Dime. I said, 'No, when was the last time YOU talked to him?' With a sigh, he said 'Three years.' Not a 'Fuckin right 3 years' not a 'Yeah three years and it's gonna be three more'... but the dude was genuinely disappointed about the situation. I could tell... the time to patch things up was drawing near.

"There's more I want to share, but it's almost 5AM right now, and I just managed to hold myself together long enough to get that out.

"Philip isn't hiding out or waiting for the right moment to speak, he's in Texas right now searching for answers to this tragedy the best he can. There was one thing he asked of me, that I humbly bring to you all:

                      • Re: RIP Dime

Just read this on Blabbermouth...No shortage of heroes there that night.

Columbus, Ohio's NBC 4 is reporting that as most fans rushed for the exits after a nightclub shooting that killed five people, a few tried to help and comfort the victims, witnesses and police say.

Those included Nathan Bray, a fan who was trying to save the life of DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott before being shot and killed himself, a witness said. A service for Bray, 23, was held Saturday in Circleville, NBC 4's Natalie Walston reported. Nearly 200 people attended the service.

"When he (Abbott) was laying on the stage, a group of people jumped up there to try and help him," said Adam Vanover, 45, of Bellefontaine.

Bray was leaning over Abbott, holding him and trying to perform CPR, Vanover said.

"When he (Bray) looked up at the shooter that's when the shooter shot him," Vanover said.

Another concertgoer, Billy Clark of New Carlisle, told the Springfield News-Sun for a story Saturday that after Abbott was shot, he jumped a railing and tried to pull Abbott to safety, but he heard more gunfire and hid behind speakers.

Clark said he and some friends moved Abbott behind the speakers and they recruited others to carry him out of the club.

"I kept telling them that 'Dime' was still a target and we had to get him out of there," Clark said.

He said he checked Abbott for a pulse but could not find one.

Columbus police spokesman Sgt. Brent Mull confirmed that fans and others attended to the victims before emergency crews arrived, but he could not comment on what happened before police got there.

Abbott, Bray and two others were killed as DAMAGEPLAN began playing at Alrosa Villa on Wednesday night. Police shot and killed the gunman, Nathan Gale, 25, of Marysville.

Gale also killed Erin Halk, 29, a club employee who loaded band equipment, and band bodyguard Jeff Thompson, 40.

Another band employee injured in the shooting, drum technician John Brooks, was released from Riverside Hospital on Friday. Tour manager Chris Paluska was in stable condition.

Linda Moore, 42, of Columbus, attended the concert with her 21-year-old son. She said she was about 10 feet to the side of the stage when Gale began shooting.

She said few people had a good view of what happened immediately after the shootings because towers of loudspeakers obscured the people onstage. She also was trying to get herself and her son out of the club.

She took issue with those who said they heard Gale yell at Abbott about the breakup of PANTERA, his old band. She said the music was so loud, no one could hear anything else.

"You don't need anything to tell you that except what the science is of decibels," Moore said.
