  • Re: Phil Anselmo Not Welcome @ Dimebag\'s Funeral

Well, if he was destined to do it, nothing is going to stop a determined person except his own conscience. If the conscience that guides him as far as right and wrong is no longer really his to 'him'.. well, then you have a problem.

Some people are of the mentality that if they are going to take their own life, then they are going to identify a source of blame as to what or who is making them miserable and take as many people out along with them as possible. I've heard this from reasonable 'sane' people.
Imagine if you were some guy struggling with this illness and suicidal thoughts. Then give that person a gun, and the fuel to distort his sanity further, and some misplaced anger to fan the flames = danger!

That is where a caregiver has to step in and play conscience and guardian.

Sorry dude, hope I didn't offend ya or anyone else when I reffered to to him as being diagnosed as a nutjob. Didn't read it through what was exactly wrong with him. My reaction was more of that it was some crazy bastard that did what he did.

it's cool, but thanks. Socially,..I used to get pissed as the illness was popular commedian/social fodder about 10-15 years ago..but now its becoming more understood after
          'A Beautiful Mind' came out.

I know of the interview, and posted it way back in this topic. Rex is still a different story, but he still chose to walk out on Pantera just the same dispite knowing what Phil said. Regardless, Phil didn't mean it literally and was just spouting off bullshit. The reports are that the fan was a crazy POS so delusioned that he thought HE was the songwriter for Pantera's music, and if that's the case, then it has nothing to do with what Phil said. Don't get me wrong though. Anselmo really made an ass of himself by saying that sh*t, but not once did he intend for Darrel to die.

[/ QUOTE ]How do you know this, exactly? Are you a mind reader? You don't know, and neither do I, really, but I'll tell you something. I grew up in a culture that's much like the culture of NOLA where Phil lives. You say sh*t like that, as a person who has some power in the underground, and don't be surprised if it falls out the way you called for it. Now you may not know that, but I do, and Phil should have, whether he did or not. The Abbott family does not deserve the added pain of seeing his face right now, and instead of crying over poor Phil people should think of Vinnie, Rita, Jerry and the rest of the Abbott family and friends. I don't feel one iota of sorrow for Phil at this point. He knows a high percentage of his personal fans are ultraviolent and he says "they'd do anything I say". Fukk him and the horse he rode in on.

              [/ QUOTE ]

Please go back and read the interview. Phil called out to hit Darrell hard enough to break his jaw, not shoot him down.

I don't want to be non-pc, but I am. Mental illness is funny, just like 'ding fries are done' is funny. We like to laugh at ourselves and situations we can't help, but it's more fun to laugh at people that have it so much worse than us, it makes US feel better.

I think we can all agree that this was tragic, and unfortunatelythe parameters for this event fell perfect to make it 'statistically' possible.
1)A guy is nuts and obsessive and just happens to be an ex-marine and 6'3" with a handgun.
2)A small club with 500 people max attending WILL NOT create enough revenue for a 4 person band with a crew and house staff and a record deal to get paid enough to warrant guarding all of the exits with off-duty police or armed security.
3)Damageplan's members and metal in general is fairly open and encourages fan involvement - security usually lets little stuff go by (jump up on stage and bang your head for a sec, then jump off, stage diveng, sneak down to the pit) because the fans and the band enjoy the spontanaity.
4)No one would anticipate the kind of hate or mental illness that would cause a fan to shoot with NO POSSIBILTY of escape. A sniper, maybe, but someone going on stage like that would more likely use a knife, which is something that normal band security could handle and would not have been that devastating.

I agree with Kerry King (a rarity) that this should change nothing about metal shows. It was crazy, and unless there is a copycat there is not much to worry about. There is nothing that can be done that won't cause small clubs to fold, cause bands to make even less money, and make concert going like the opera where you sit in your chair all night and aplaud at the end.

Darrell Would Not Want Metal to Change

How do we know the killer read the article with Phil talking smack? We don't. I read what he said and I believe its being taken way out of context. He said Dime attacked him verbally and if he tried it physically that he is so much more bigger than Dime and would kill him in a fight, that really is the jest of it. I lay no blame on Phil for a psycho killer going over the edge and acting out like that. The guy had major mental illness and was deranged long before Phil said anything. We really don't know he heard what Phil had said anyway.

Obviously, if you don't have to live with it, then it probably is funny. What is even funnier is it could happen to anyone, like the big ole karma choo choo coming up to smack you upside the head. If it happens to you, then I guess you'll be laughing at yourself a whole lot more.

I just want to clarify that I feel you are correct, things we laugh at and enjoy for entertainment definitely aren't things we'd wish on anyone was my point. But for some reason it's funny on the big screen or when we tell jokes, not so funny when it's me, you, or someone you care about.
Mental illness is not funny itself, but we enjoy some pretty sick humor overall. Laughing at other's misfortunes is something that humans enjoy for some reason.

For example, 'ding fries are done' - you can't help but laugh, even though retardation is not funny and anyone with a retarded relative can tell you how sad it is that there relative will never grow out of that state.
Mental illnesses are the same way, we laugh about Ron being 'OCD', I guarantee people with OCD don't think it's funny.
We also laugh when we see 'Me myself and Irene' a schizo movie.
Just wanted to make sure you guys knew I was sensitive to the issue, but recognize that we are all guilty of being insensitive at some level.

I understood what you meant. The written word is very difficult to use when subtle context twists are needed. We all need to read between the lines and look for the meaning in the words.

Of course, what you say is true and I see your point a little more clearly now.
Humor knows no boundries except in the human conscience and each of ours is built a little different.

Agreed. I really hope there isn't a knee-jerk reaction to this. It'll only take something away from the fans. Remember when metal shows were general admission no matter what size the venue was? I miss those days.

Tommy - I hope that we all give you strength to help you win your fight.

We are all guilty at some point in our lives of doing harm ( vocal) to others. The fact that we realize this gives us hope that the next time we are about to commit such acts we will reflect on it and be the better man. Do the right thing. It is not easy to do. I hope that anything that I have said to others will not be taken so literally. That being said, I will also try to look past things that others have said to me that were painful to swallow.

I don't think Phil wanted this to happen. He will have to live with it the rest of his life.

We are all mortal. We are born with flaws.

A good friend of mine always says, "The last person who thought he was perfect has holes in his hands..."

Twisted humor - I think so. Truth to it. - I think so.
