Well, if he was destined to do it, nothing is going to stop a determined person except his own conscience. If the conscience that guides him as far as right and wrong is no longer really his to 'him'.. well, then you have a problem.
Some people are of the mentality that if they are going to take their own life, then they are going to identify a source of blame as to what or who is making them miserable and take as many people out along with them as possible. I've heard this from reasonable 'sane' people.
Imagine if you were some guy struggling with this illness and suicidal thoughts. Then give that person a gun, and the fuel to distort his sanity further, and some misplaced anger to fan the flames = danger!
That is where a caregiver has to step in and play conscience and guardian.
