By the way, it wasn't always like that in Canada. I used to wear my Dayglo Abortions **** Censorship T-shirt in high school all the time. Of course, that was 15 years ago. Fukk, I'm gettin' old.

Slavery was one of the causes of the war, the south didn't fire the first shot and declare war over TAXES, and as long as you have groups like the KKK waving the confederate flag it will be associated with racism. Not to forget that the south did indeeed oppose the end of slavery, and that fact will never change no matter how many times you tell yoursef that the flag is about heritage. The flag only existed as a battle flag for five years, yet some southerners obsess over those five years moreso than the centuries before or after, and I think it's sad.

The confederate flag is not the old south. It didn't exist until the war for which it was created for. The old south predates the flag by 100 years easily.

You can't be surprised if people don't like it. Slavery aside, no one has killed as many Americans as the confederates did. Not Hitler, Hussein, or anyone else. The confederate body count against Americans was something that Hitler could only have wet dreams about. For what? A land grab with ripping the country in two? Power-hungry people who would rather rip the country apart so they can rule their own place than accept that democracy sometimes means not getting your way? If the confederacy was legit, then are democrats today legit if they were to secede over Bush's election and policies? I personally think that the perspective that they were murderous traitors is the correct one.

When are they going to outlaw moustaches, because Hitler had one? When are they going to ban white clothes, because the KKK wear them? When are they gonna change the name of Baton Rouge because it shares a name common with the Khamir Rouge? When are they just going to make us wear brown drabby clothes, have the same haircut, make the same amount of money and makes us call each other Commerade? PC stinks of commie socialist crap...........

Anyone watch the Dave Chapell (sp?) show? One of his first episodes was on the other night. In it, he did a skit about a famous white supremicist book writer. He would go around speaking at all the KKK rallies, dunce hood on and all. Only the guy was actually a blind black man, raised his entire life to think he was white. Oh man, that was some funny non-PC s**t. That dude's show is a riot.

I hate seeing frivolous lawsuits that waste the courts time. I do feel this lawsuit is a waste of the courts time. But I do hope she wins. For the past decade the PC society has slowly been erasing southern heritage. Here in my home town we have renamed roads, buildings, removed statues of famous General from prominent places. Other states have had to quit flying the stars and bars, other have had to remove it from their license plates. It is nothing more than a battle flag. Those who call it a symbol of racism need to go back to school themselves. Slavery was not the cause of the war. To drum up support for the war both domestic and foreign it became the battle cry for the North. So now all southerners are supposed to carry some badge of shame and shun anything to do with the old south. My family fought for the South. In fact my father's family came to this country as indentured servants (slaves) in the early 1700s. They worked of their debt and became property owners.

[/ QUOTE ]Slavery was an issue, but the main issue was that each sovereign state joined the Union of its own free will, and should have had the right to leave the nion if it wished. The issue is not addressed by the Constitution, and was resolved by brute force by the Union. By the way, the Union DID NOT FREE ITS OWN SLAVES UNTIL AFTER THE WAR. The Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in the seceded states. If you really consider the Confederates to have been traitors, I suggest you keep that to yourself if you're ever in the South. You may as well say George Washington was a traitor to the British Crown as say that here. Southerners are among the most patriotic Americans today, but still have patriotic feelings about the Confederacy as well. No Confederate general was ever as barbaric in Union territory as Sherman was in the South, especially Georgia, either. Untold thousands of people died at his hands or by exposure or starvation - women and children. As for the body count of the Civil War, all Lincoln had to do was let the Confederate states go their way freely, as they had entered the Union, they had the right to leave it. That has STILL never been addressed constitutionally and was only done by force of arms. The Confederates took a fort in their territory, garrisoned by Federal troops, most of whom had let the other Southern forts. Lincoln left the troops at Sumter to goad the Confederates into firing first, and would have let them starve to death to get his provocation. The South didn't invade Union territory until the Union had invaded theirs first. Finally, in the last months of the war, President Jefferson Davis and the Confederate Congress DID agree that slavery would have to be abolished in the long run,and gave it up as a reason for continuing the war. At that point it was a war for Southern independence just as the Revolutionary war was a war for American independence. I guess if we'd lost that one all of us would still be considered traitors 228 years later? Well, the British might see it that way, but most Americans wouldn't.

Sceond, I hope this girl and her family do win their lawsuit. I also hope that other family wins the $25 million lwasuit against Wal-Mart for selling a gun to their mentally ill daughter who killed herself in Texas. It's going to take a lot more of these lawsuits to go through until this country wakes up and realizes that the way people are handling this stuff is plain stupid. We're teaching the children that you don't have to work hard to be successful and rich. You just need to find an angle and sue. Annoys the hell out of me.

Thank you. You forgot to mention the division because of the Depression in the early 1800's that nearly devistated the North but did little to the south.

Slavery was not any underlying cause of the Civil War. It was an issue, yes, but only sort of after the fact. If it weren't for political strife and disagreements about the Constitution between the States, coupled with the depression in the North, the war might have never happened.
