The four members of MÖTLEY CRÜE were recently interviewed by Metal Edge magazine for a cover story about their upcoming reunion tour. Several excerpts from guitarist Mick Mars's portion of the interview follow:

Metal Edge: Other members of the band have said that they view the reunion as something vital in your recovery process. Do you view it that way?

Mick Mars: "No, because I refuse to be exploited. We all have reasons to come back. They have their side projects, but I don't think those are anything to oserious. It's really rough for me being out on the road, it's rough keeping up with the schedule. It's rough enough for a healthy guy, but I weigh 112 pounds and I'm not fully recovered yet, and I've done all this stuff already that 's really wearing me down faster than I can heal."

Metal Edge: Was it rough for you on the road the last time MÖTLEY toured?

Mick Mars: "Pretty much. There's a lot of flying around, playing live at radio stations, then playing live at night, doing promotions like Macintosh — two, three, four places in a day. Even on a Lear jet, I still couldn't get healthy."

Metal Edge: Do you feel like you're recuperating at a decent pace now? Are you optimistic about being healthy enough to head out on tour in February?

Mick Mars: "Probably by then. It all depends how much they're going to schedule in between. It's kind of like if you wake up from a deep sleep, and have to go straight to work and can't go back to sleep — you're going to be tired. You need to catch up on sleep before you can really be awake. I have to be healthy before I really start working again."

Metal Edge: It seems like everyone's got their different reasons for going back to the band. Why do you think MÖTLEY is getting back together right now?

Mick Mars: "Greed. No on my part. And I won't say on everyone else's part, but there is greed around me. There's greed in everything, though, not just this. It's everywhere."

Metal Edge: For those that aren't familiar with the disease, what exactly does it do to you?

Mick Mars: "It changes up your spine, it affects your eyes, you can't see as clear with them. Right now, my disease has gone up to my brain stem and into my throat and stuff — I have one vocal cord working and the other is dead. I have a team of doctors trying to figure out how to get it back so that I can have a full voice again. It's like there are bones growing over your bones and shifting it up — like if you were to put a brace on your back, then try and stand up, you can’t do it. It gets to your hands, it gets in your elbows, it gets in your knees, any place there are joints. It starts in the hips, and that's why I had the one replaced and need to do another one. It has nothing to do with age — you could be 17 or 18 years old and have it, and what happens is, they need to cut it out, or it goes through your whole body."

Metal Edge: It sounds excruciatingly painful.

Mick Mars: "It is, it is… And you go to the doctor, and they give you the quick fix, so I had to get myself off that whole thing, too. They don’t try to treat it, they just give you pain pills. Well, why don't you do anything about it? Overseas they do things, they have remedies, and they work like eighty percent of the time, but over here, the doctors really don't seem to know a lot about it, and it's really upsetting.

Man, I feel sorry for Mick. Sounds like the other guys greed will make his health worse. I bet they don't consider it much when they schedule the promotional stuff in between. If I was him, I would tell them to s'crue themselves and their greed....my health is way more important, and I'm going overseas to get better. Seems like there are plenty of overseas Dr's here though. Mayo clinic maybe?

Re: mick mars \'effing rules.

He should ease up on the promo stuff and rest up while the other guys handle that. They do most of the talking anyway, and if it helps his health to be resting while the others do a meet and greet, people will understand. Sure they'll be disappointed if they can't meet him, but still glad to see the show, dont'cha
think? Anyway, I'm not a rabid Crue fan, but wish them well, especially Mick.

Am I allowed to off-topic the thread a bit? I never listened to MC, but after reading this article I started to realise that Mick and my mom share the same disease.

F-ucking shit ... Doctors from the whole country and even from Germany or Belguim couldn't help her. The disease cannot be recognized or diagnosed via CT scan, X-ray or any kind of scan, nor via operation ... You basically have to live with that.

Poor Mick. Western "Medicine" is all about treating the symptoms, not the cause.
Mick has to promote and talk about it because it's being billed as a reunion, and if Mick doesn't talk, others will talk for him. Is there anybody in the Motley camp who you would like to have speak for you if you couldn't? They are a bunch of money grubbing scumbags, the lot of them, from band thru managers and staff...I feel real bad for Mick.

I didn't realize he had a bone disease. I thought he was just a wreck from years of drug abuse.

He does sound like a trooper, although it seems questionable as to whether he is ready for the stress of touring. Like someone else said, maybe it is a "now or never" kind of situation.

He is 1 tough mutha. I am glad he speaks his mind and the truth! He writes great guitar hooks. I hope he gets the help he needs. I hope they dont wear him out on the road. He is the only one on that band that is "real". Never a douchebag. No ego. Very spiritual. The other guys are a bunch of ass clowns... I hope he gets well.

I saw a recent interview on MYV and he sat in the back but spoke many times. He sounded very weak but his fire inside is strong.

He is the only one I admire in MC. The rest are media whores.

Seems like they could work it out to where he can at least just sit in the hotel room or wherever, and interview on the phone. If I were Mick, I would've told them up front that I would tour as long as certain conditions were met to accomodate my health issues. Hope he makes it through the tour okay. Sorry to hear about your mother Immortal.

Re: mick mars \'effing rules.

Has anyone here read "The Dirt" the Motley Crue autobiography? If you haven't check it out.

Mick is pretty much the only sane person in the band. As far as I can tell he doesn't drink, he doesn't do drugs. The only money he has blown has been on ex-wives and alimony. Plus I hear he has a killer Charvel collection.

He talked in the book about being scarred someone in the audience would grab his hand doing a high five and he would lose his balance and fall into the audience. He was and has been in pretty much constant pain through all or their success.

I've always liked his playing too. Nicki gets a lot of props but the Crue wouldn't be the Crue without Micks rude guitar.
