not really damage but, i had a MIM Strat years ago and i had put it on the couch on a cushion leaning against the armrest, after a late night of practicing. Well i have 2 cats. During the night the male had taken great pains to back up against it and take a big crap and pee. The guitar then decided to slide a bit afterwards and got into the bridge. Tried to "fix it" but it just wasn't the same after that. Never could bring myself to put it around my neck again. Sold it for $100.00

Re: Strangest guitar damage stories

Didn't damage my guitar, but I was getting ready for a practice session and I was in a hurry. I was at home and thought I could pick up the guitar for a 15-20 minute warmup before I left to go to practice. I started playing and before I knew it, it was later than I thought. In a hurry, I went to take the guitar off of me, so over my head it went.

Except the guitar strap wasn't cooperating. Just as it was about face level, the strap acted like a rubber band and pulled the guitar back into my face. About 2 seconds later my face was squirting blood like someone had duct-taped a water pistol on the side of my face.

Off to the hospital to get 5 stitches to close it up. Had a tough time convincing the doctor that my guitar had just beaten the sh1t out of me.

At band rehersal, our lead guitarist (young kid with a Vai fetish) was strutting around the practice shed showing off his brand-new (like 45 minutes new) Washburn. He starts flipping the guitar around his back - I tell him that's probably not a good idea. Right after I said that, he flips it again - the straplocks release - the beautiful white Washburn launches right out the open shed door on a medium trajectory, eventually making a perfect one-point splintering...err...landing (headstock) about 15 ft away in front of a neighboring bands shed.

We all actually managed to not laugh until the other band walked out and began performing last rites on it. Then we laughed for about a week...

Re: Strangest guitar damage stories

Three years ago at the Buffalo Musiancs Flea Market/Guitar show, there was this snob who set up his table of Gibsons. It was his little collection, nothing was for sale and each guitar had a little sign "Not for sale, do not touch". Behind him a kid who makes his own basses was setting up a large metal display rack to hang the basses and a sign from. The truss shifted forward as he was assembling it and it knocked the Gibson dudes 1961 Cherry stop tail ES-335 off the stand and on the floor. That sound people talk about when you hear a headstock break was so loud and well known that it silenced the entire room. The headstock broke right off, no cracking, no veneer holding things together, it was now a Steinberger! The guy went after the kid, but the kid had no money or insurance. I have no idea how they settled it.

One thing I hate about guitar shows is jerks who just grab guitars and don't know or care how to but them back right. One guy I go with had an old Gibson archtop from the 40's. It was drop dead mint. Some ass dropped ittrying to put it back on the stand and cracked the side and popped a piece of binding. He booked it out the door before we could catch him.

When I was 15, I thought I would toss my guitar onto my bed from this swinging chair I was sitting in...*Bounce* *Snap* "Doh"!

I got real drunk one night while me and my buddy were jamming in my garage/band room, I get up the coffee tabe he had furnished my room with and tried swinging the guitar around my neck and speared the table breaking the tip off my beloved Charvette!

And definitely not him in a dress. I look forward to meeting everyone at NAMM. Of course, I may be so excited to see everything there that some may get ignored. I'll be too busy picking out the guitars I want!

Re: Strangest guitar damage stories

My story is not a happy one. I used to have a really nice Alvarez acoustic, a DY75DCB, she was a beauty. After a particularly rough day at work many years ago, I came home in a less than jovial mood. My dog however, was in a great mood, and proceeded to run circles around me at about twice the speed of sound. Not being in the mood for his antics, I hollered at him twice to sit down, when he didn't, I reached out to swat him on the ass. He saw me coming a mile away, and jumped straight sideways, and all 70 pounds of him went through that guitar like it was made of paper.

I felt pretty sick to say the least. The biggest piece of that body would have easily fit in my apartments mailbox.

Re: Strangest guitar damage stories

I loaned an old Marshall Super Bass head and RR 0944 to a friend who had a gig coming up. The head had a ground problem, nothing major but if you touched anything that was properly grounded you'd get a buzz sufficient to numb your hand for a few seconds. The head was the single sweetest sounding amp I've ever played and I was a little afraid that repairing this minor issue would ruin it so I just lived with it and warned others who used it about the issue. Besides, being able to zap lazy bandmates is great fun after a few beers.

A few songs into my friend's first set he steps up to the mic stand for his first turn singing. Before he got a single word out an arc of electricity jumped from his lips to the mic stand and knocked him flat. RR 0944 went straight up into the air and landed face-down on a tile floor with, miraculously, no damage other than a new paint chip at the headstock tip (said headstock was later cracked in shipping by UPS).

Well, In my blazer one night I hit this speedbump, only it wasn't a speedbump. It was a friends guitar who after practice, laid it against my truck or something and drove off leaving it. I began to pull out, in slow motion, and all I could think of was, 'WTF was that'.
I get out and there is his prized guitar. A Yamaha Pacifica, OK guitar, but his main player. crushed the electronics from the front down into the cavity. Everything else was fine. But the worst part was, having to tell him.

He wound up gettin a Melancon(sp?) or somethin like that, much nicer, I'd say it done him good.

These are all great stories. I don't have any stories that involve guitars being launched thru the air. Mainly, they involve whacking the headstock against amps/speakers when turning my body and not looking out for it, followed by cringing and looking it over for damage. ..I can't remember the last time this has happened to me though..it's been at least several days! Re: Strangest guitar damage stories

I had this POS 'thing' (don't want to use the term guitar here) when I was just beginning to play. Needless to say I loved the thing to death, and being a beginner I didn't exactly have $2000 around for a new LPC or whatnot, so I treasured it. I had just jammed a bit (upstairs) and put the guitar in the corner (between the stairs' support and the wall). It was a snug fit, and it was really standing firm. The radio was playing, and this awesome song came up (I believe it was Sanitarium by Metallica, and the last part was just going, that really still gets me going) so I rush to the radio to turn it up, my foot catches in my strap, but I didn't really notice until I was a couple of feet away and near the radio.

I turned around and watched, in the plenty aforementioned slow-motion how the guitar balanced PERFECTLY on the straplock on the middle of the side of the guitarbody, it spinned about 90°.

And where there would be NO way it could fir through one of the many 'holes' between the multiple pillars of the stairs' supports, it now fit nicely. It of course did not fall in the right direction, slipped through the support and fell a whole story in freefall onto my mom's prized marble floor. The neck was snapped, chips everywhere and the floor was pretty **** up.
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.
