• Strangest guitar damage stories

Ok I"m sure you guy will have some great stories about how your beloved axe took some damage. Mines not overly bizarre but still just one of those things where you go "Sonnofa...."
Had a Ibanez 540SLTD with the Purple Neon Pearlescent type finish. It was my baby. Kept it safe from damage for 9 years. Then after playing one day I set it on its stand and decided to take a break and put the dishes away. Well clumsy as I am I dropped a coffee mug. Time suddenly went into slow motion as I watched the handle of the mug shoot off and travel roughly 25ft outta the kitchen straight into the guitar striking it right on the front of the body causing a nice gouge.
Needless to say I was not impressed.
Well that was the deciding factor to finally trade it in and move on. In the end it sorta worked out because it was replaced by my 1st Jackson, a Black Ghost Flame SL1.

Wow, 25 ft. That's quite a jump from the kitchen to another room. I think it needs to be tested for performance enhancing drugs!

Oh man, the funniest thing I've ever seen done to a guitar was at my tech's work shop. A guitar buyer had brought in a Gibson Chet Atkins acoustic/electric that had been damaged during transit. There was a slight crack running from the neck up into the headstock.

My tech was about to inject some type of glue into the crack, but the clamp/vise that he wanted to use did not close the crack properly. A friend of ours happened to be standing there with his thumb up his butt and the tech asked him to hold the neck of the guitar and slightly apply pressure by pushing down on the neck.

The contact cement was injected, pressure applied at both ends, then POP! The most sickening sound you can imagine! I'll never forget the look on my tech's face as he sat there with the headstock in his hand.

I was in a friend's vintage shop in Newport, RI. about 15 years ago. A guy walks in, is looking at guitars {duh}, and proceeds to try out an original black 69 Strat. I'm about 5 ft. away and watched him looking it over, turning it arount, etc. He finally lifts the guitar to sight the neck, with the headstock towards the ceiling, but failed to notice the ceiling fan. The blades hit the neck at the nut and put a gouge in it the size of a nickel, and deep. No, he didn't have to buy it, but was quickly asked to leave...and never come back. Another story...I was working on my newly aquired {$4,500.00} 1961 SG Std w/P.A.F.'s. These guitars are notorious for headstock breaks. It was lying flat on a bench, and I was cleaning/setting it up and had it plugged into a Strob-O-Tuner. The phone rang, I went to walk around the bench to answer it, and my foot caught the cable and yanked the SG right off the bench. When it hit the floor and bounced from the body end, to the headstock, I could hear the wood vibrating. I hesitated before picking it fearing the worse, but amazingly, no chips or cracks. That was a close one...Another one...I was 5 min. away from doing a trade for a 9.9 cond. 1963 Epiphone Crestwood Deluxe which has the same appointments as a Les Paul Custom {a very rare guitar}. I had it in the case, on the couch, ready to go out the door. While I was in the other room, my girlfriend opened the case to look at it but failed to latch it when she closed the case. Then, here I come ready to leave, grab the guitar, which proceeds to roll out of the case and hit the floor. It took her less than a minute {a very long minute} to fess up to opening the case and forgetting to latch it. There was a good ding right in the frong near the bass edge of the body from the case latch. Fortunately, that was the extent of the damage and the trade went through without a hitch.

i launched my early 80s NJ warlock thru a garage door once!

i was 15 or so, and at band practice. my band played some covers, one of them being crazy train. i'd just learned the solo, but i wasn't able to play it at speed. we kept playing it over and over, and i got so mad that i couldn't do it, and all of a sudden the end of the "boyz r gonna rock" video came to mind.

angrily, i took the guitar off and launched it thru my friend's garage door (we played in there). i remember looking through the hole it created, and watching it skid on the driveway.

When we were young, maybe 15 or 16 our other guitarist used to leave his guitar at the house. We practiced in the basement but kept the guitar upstairs. Before practice I "tripped" at the top of the stairs and the guitar went flying down. When the desired results didn't happen I tripped several more times at the top of the stairs until full glory was achieved. We then took all the pieces and used the strings to make a "mobile" and hung it from the ceiling of the basement. When the other guy got there the look on his face was like, "ohmyfukkingod, what happened"? I proceed to tell him how I almost took a header down the steps and I was sorry his guitar got busted. What an ass I was back in the day. Oh, and it was no Gibby or anything. I think the name on it was "Telstar" or something like that. He forgave me. I was play my first big gig ever and as I jumped up on the drum riser my cheap ass drummer hit is crash and the duct tape holding the legs in place gave way and the cymbal came crashing down right on my guitar, taking some paint and wood with it. I was is shock, this was my first nice guitar, and it took me a few seconds to gather myself and get going again. I still hae the that guitar 20+ years later and it now looks pretty beat.

I know someone who cracked the neck of a really nice guitar. Tried to move the oboy fully stocked and this really nice guitar fell off. I hear some really nasty words coming from the guitar room!

Yeah yeah yeah... My Kramer Pacer Custom cracked at the scarf joint when it fell off the rack as I was trying to move it to the middle of the room. All the money I spent refurbishing the neck... down the toilet.

After a bit of reflection... My story isn't strange... it's just stupid, and stupid from me isn't strange.

It's only strange because of the stupid phone guy that was the cause of needing to move the guitars! And don't worry, maybe I'll find a new neck for your b-day!

Re: Strangest guitar damage stories

I bought a trans purple quilt Dinky reverse many years back. I think it was my first Jackson actually. First band practice with it, and it was about 2 days old. Between songs, I stood there saying how nervous I was that I didn't have time to go out and buy straplocks yet, and as I finished the sentence, the strap slipped off the bottom button, and the guitar crashed to the floor. I think I stood staring at it with my mouth wide open for at least a minute before I dared pick it up to look at it.

When I did, there was a giant chunk out of the front edge near the knobs, about 2" long and 1/2" wide.

As it turned out, I had to return the guitar anyway, because the bridge post were starting to pull through the wood. They gave me credit towards another guitar, and I stupidly bought a cheapo Kelly Pro. I sold it very soon afterwards.
