I predict the mustang will fall next

I'm not sure why you would say either of those above. Not that I'm a huge fan of the new GTs, but they can't keep them on the lots and they are selling for over list - easily, with a long waiting list. So I think your theory on the Mustang going next might be a bit off. The Mustang is a Ford institution and they do care about them. You can see it in the styling of the new GT - very retro classic with the proper updates and (finally!) giving the standard GT the proper HP it deserves (300HP - stock).
They have had a huge success with their limited editions in the last few years (the Bullitt, the Mach 1, and the Cobra is a consistant seller). The word from Ford is that there will be a Shelby limited edition in the next year or so. So, I'm guessing that the Mustang will be around for quite a while.

I have to say if any retro name is being treated fairly, it is the Mustang. Maybe not quite as old school as I'd hoped, but it is definitely well executed. I don't see it going away.

SUre the mustang is hot now, they are all hot when then first hit. THe re issue t bird had a 2 yr waiting list, that car is now been dumped. The mustang will enjoy a brief nostalgia surge and people will certainly buy them, but sales will not endure. Do you ever read the publication "the automotive news"?? that really lays the facts on the line for the car biz. Like the SSR, it sold for well over MSRP when introduced, now dealers are trying to get rid of them for invoice....the mustang will follow that same path. I would bet big money on it. You can almost set your clock on it. when big hype cars like that are introduced, they have a major surge in sales and popularity, once the novelty has worn off, the sales lack extremely....expecially when used ones start hitting the market. People who actaull still want one can buy one for peanuts compared to forkin out big chang for a new one, thats what helps destroy the market. This will happen with the new C6 vette too, just watch they will sell for more than MSRP the first year out and then the novelty will diminish and they will be selling them at discounts, gauranteed!! Yes, I am quite sure Ford cares about the mustang and its legacy, as does GM about the Camaro/firebird/vette, and Dodge about the charger....but the auto makers dont buy cars, the public does. So the automakers can care all they want about preserving nameplates and legacies, truth is the public will determine what vehicles fly or die. and the public has been making a steady shift towards SUVs, Trucks, SUV hybrids, and moving away from cars in general, ESPECIALLY sports cars. See the camaro/firebird is an excellent example of what did happen and what will continue to happen. The R & D costs and production costs end up outweighing the profits than can be made on it. So they are forced to cancel the line. Its simple supply and demand. and dont forget part of what affects that is skyrocketing costs of insurance on "sport" cars. That is the MAJOR deterent to people inquiring about them.
SO while I dont think the mustang is gonna be gone in the next year or two, but I would say it will be gone in 5 to 10 years. The sales will simply not be able to support the production costs on too few units sold. Its simple economics....they wont last. Auto makers are feverishly focusing on expanding the SUV market to come up with the next best thing and people are eating it up.

That is as stupid as it gets!! I grew up in a family with miscle car Chryslers and Chrysler 300`s, the real ones. These new cars are a joke at best. If you are going to make a Charger, make it like the late 60`s model and a big V-8 and a hurst 4 speed. The only new muscle car I like now is the C6 Vette and Viper GTS, that`s it. Damn, even the Ford Expidition doesn`t even have a real bumper on them anymore-yuck!! I have loved the Dodge Dakota since the beginning, but ooh is the new ones fugly, what is with that stupid front bumper. Jack.

In 20 years the new Vette will look like the '84 Vette does today. The second generation Charger has a timeless beauty they have not been able to capture in recent decades. Its about style as well.

Re: 2006 Dodge Charger coming this Spring

I know of several cars that GM was supposed to put into production that got yanked because of market trends. GM had a competitor for hte T bird all set, but canned it because of the T birds failure. Chevy has toyed around with reviving the "El Camino" name plate and I think they are really starting to think twice about it now with SSR sales cooling down bigtime.
The Truck & suv market is booming and thats where the automakers are really trying to create niches and capture buyers. consumers are really into these new SUV and SUV spinoffs. Chevy has a new one out soon and pontiac does too.

looks silly with four doors. they should have honoured the original a lot more. I much prefer the Ford "re-issues" like the mustang, shelby cobra, ford gt etc. They have a lot more grace.

Hey hey. As an owner of a 1973 Charger and a huge MOPAR fan this thing just pisses me off. Chrysler says there is no market for a 2 door Charger.........HAHAHAHAHAA Morons. I would have bought the new Charger if it were the 1999 prototype. Now I just will stick the $$$ in my Charger. That's ok too. My car allready smokes the new one anyway..Hehehehe.

Yes, keep bashing the new cars. The fact is, as much as I love the old Charger, they drove like trucks, had shit steering, and cornered like a shopping cart. Old cars are great, but if I had to drive a Charger everyday of the week, I would take the new one any day.........And the old Charger is one of my favorite cars. I guess I am less myopic than you guys............

Re: 2006 Dodge Charger coming this Spring

I just think the new sport cars are shadows of what they once were. THey lack that raw muscle power they once had. Brute strength and horsepower. Yes, the new ones handle MUCH better, but I have a hard time having them share the same name as the old ones and be considered "performance cars". If they are gonna be performance cars, FUKKIN MAKE THEM PERFORMANCE CARS!!!! like 350+ horsepower and kick ass styling is certainly required. dont offer a "cheap" version like the V6 mustangs/camaros/etc.... that just weakens the nameplate. Dont make a car with the history and pride of a muscle car and then give it a standard V6 engine.....that just screams LOSER!!! I want to be cool, but I am just a geek that thinks he is driving a cool car. I mean come on! there is noting more pathetic than a 4 cyl mustang, NOTHING! they should have never even built them, the fact they did makes the new ones weaker, cheaper. when Ford revamped the mustang in 1994 they were really just a polished turd. I was selling Fords then and I got to demo the new GT when it was introduced....Ford should have been embarrassed to put the mustang badge on that car!! The damn AWD explorers with the 5.0 in 1996 had more horsepower in the 5.0 than the mustangs!!!the so called performance car was out performed by their own SUV! thats wrong! although the mustang GT had way more top end, the 5.0 explorers could beat it out of the hole every time. I am not just slamming fords here, GM did the same retarded thing puttin gV6 in the Camaro and firebirds.

I just think performance cars should be just that, performance cars. nothing less. not family cars, not 4 doors, not V6 models. I mean make me piss my pants fast is what I want!!!

The RS6 has 4 doors, and there are quite a few of them with 600 and 700 horsepower, and they handle extrememly well. The S8 is the same, a 4 door car that can outtrack these old 2 door shopping carts. Performance cars should be good going around a track. Going 1/4 mile in a straight line, and having to slow down to 30 in order to make a turn is just plain sad. These new cars are great..............

just for the record, the 5.0 awd explorers topped out at like only 85 mph, but they got there like a jack rabbit, toasted the mustangs....sadly.

If it were not for the snow, the Charger here would be driven daily. However, it is a power steering and disk brake car.
