I have a feeling I know what you mean there Tommy. It's not going through the pain that makes you more of man, it's being there and being strong for people that aren't.

Eliminating the pain "completely", is no way to go man, and you need to drop that thought right now. There are a lot of people that care very much about you, and they hurt when you hurt. There's more to all of this than it seems sometimes. Don't do something stupid bro to sidestep things, it don't work.

I beg of you to stay strong and don't do anything we'll all regret. I know so much bad shit has happened but you need to be here with us.

just got off the phone with him, and he said that even among all of this mess, something good happened, and he'll tell me about it in an hour or so. he definitely can use some good news, so i'm lookin forward to that call for sure.

Yes, there is a reason we have pain in this life- it's so we can recognize and enjoy all that is truly wonderful. Maybe it sounds sappy, but I know this.
I don't know your friend, but I bet he loved you and would want you to be whole and healthy. I would think he would be happy to see you standing and remembering him clean and strong. Forgive me if I've overstepped the line...
You go through your pain and experience it and you will come out stronger and more whole.
I'm sorry you have to go through this.

Tommy, I'm so sorry to hear this, jeez, how much shit to hit at once?? I'm sure Sean would want you to be straight, and think of his mom and the rest of the family and friends. In a real way, you are all they have left of him to hold onto, as his best friend.
For you to show up wasted, would crush everybody there, and would crush you when you came down. Sean deserves that you feel the pain of his loss; you have to know when my brother died in July, part of me wanted to go get some meth and blow my heart up, so I wouldn't have to think of life without my only brother. But hell, where would that leave my sisters, losing both their brothers at once?

It will hurt like hell, but feeling the pain instead of just numbness is the right way to do it. Crying and mourning with the others who also loved him, talking about his life and the great things about him, all deserve to be done wth clear mind, even if you shared a lot of buzzy blurry memories.

Tommy, you know we really love you here. I'm in about the same straits as you but I'd do anything I could for you. Most of the folks here feel the same way. Don't turn away when people want to help you, man, that's what friends are for and one of the best feelings a person can have is to help a friend. Get with our bros and sisters that're doing NAMM, cut loose with them and let them be there for you.
