That voodoo doll in Trilogy of terror was really scary. I forgot about that one.

They say that locking yourself in the bathroom in the dark, looking into the mirror, and screaming "Bloody Mary" 13 times in a row will bring her out of the mirror and she will scratch the living hell out of your face.

I heard that once. Then I spent the next 30 minutes in front of the bathroom mirror saying, "Sandra Bullock, Sandra Bullock, San..."

"Trilogy of Terror"?

[/ QUOTE ]

Remember it well. Little doll holding a knife in his teeth. Around the same time was Night Gallery, with Roddy McDowell. He has a picture by the stairs in his house and everytime he looks at it, it showed a grave outside the house where he had killed somebody, and each time he looked at it, the picture would have a different scene, like the dirt would be thrown off the grave, then the casket door would be open next, then you could see the guy climbing out of the casket, then next would show him walking toward the door.

[/ QUOTE ]

Night Gallery used to scare the crap out of me when I was a little kid, Good One!
I've got to go with the Excorcist as well. Actually ever since that one, no horror movie has scared me since, Dee Sniders movie "Strangeland" was pretty sick but not scary, when I saw the Excorcist they had it on the same bill as "Mark of the Devil" that movie was sick, the salem witch hunts and all of the tortures the church used . At the time incredibly graphic.

I'll second Night Gallery as being among the best. The first episode I ever saw was the one where the couple bought the house where a woman had once been hanged for being a witch. She would torment the lady of the house by appearing in the mirror with her, etc... Good stuff.

Movies and TV aside, I only have one irrational fear and this is it:

Re: Scariest movie ever?

There are way too many to remember, these ones scared me when I was a kid.

Rosemary's Baby
The Exorcist

Nothing really compared to those older ones but I do like Hellraiser Pinhead, Nightmare on Elm Street. I thought the Ring was a really good "new" movie.

I find most newer movies that are supposed to be scary are more of a comedy than a horror flick.

Re: Scariest movie ever?

Wow! Great thread! I'm a big horror movie buff, as is my Dad. I really dig the old B&W horror films. One of the most terrifying images I have EVER seen comes from the 1922 silent film "Nosferatu" with Max Schreck. The movie is essentially the tale of Dracula, and Nosferatu is the vampire. Permanently burnt into my mind is the image of Nosferatu as he creeps into a scene. Truly a horrifying sight. It's a great film that is rentable at Blockbuster. I highly recommend it.

The Exorcist is my all-time scariest entry. There's nothing quite like a well told story of Satan, possession, the Roman Catholic Church (of which I am a faithful member), coupled with awesome special effects. I've got this one on DVD and still watch it often.

The Ring was scary, sort of. For me, it's all about how the director, the actors, the lighting, and the editing come together. In THE Ring, there were some great moments where I was freaked a bit.

There was another film released a couple months back; Sarah Michelle Gellar was in it and it was set in Tokyo or something. Can't recall the name of it....pretty scary film but only because the film was edited and lit just so.

My big interest is in vampirism. I've probably seen a good portion of the vampire movies made, be it for tv or the big screen. I've done years of studying the historical ideas of vampires in different parts of the world and its amazing how far back they were a part of folklore. The vampire will always be the ultimate movie monster, IMO.

Re: Scariest movie ever?

Bill reminded me about Don't be Afraid of the Dark. That one got me good when I was a kid. The little troll things are dragging her down into the crawlspace & she scares 'em away with a camera flash, but it runs out & they get her & turn her into one of them.

Another one I remember from the '70s was called SSSSSSSSssssssss. This guy goes to work in a lab researching poisonous snakes & the evil doctor injects him with stuff supposedly to make him immune to venom, but he's really turning him into a snakeman, & eventually a snake. Cheesy but kinda freaky.

Great title, crappy movie: Shriek of the Mutilated. Early '70s movie where it looks like they are searching for the Yeti, but it's really a cover for a cannibal cult who are eating the supposed victims of the monster. So bad that it's good, & the theme song was that horrible synthesizer song "Popcorn". If you remember that song, you're an old fukker like me.

Did anybody else see Shadow of the Vampire with John Malkovich? He's the director of the silent Dracula movie, Nosferatu & they bring in a freaky german guy (Willem Dafoe) to play the monster & it turns out he's a real vampire. That one got me! It's sort of funny & you're chuckling along, then the ending comes like a kick in the stomach & makes you wonder who the real monster is. Great movie!

Speaking of silent movies, they can be scary as hell. The lighting & choppiness add to it. The silent Phantom of the Opera is good, Nosferatu is better (terrifying visuals, like Tom said, & my favorite version of the monster), & The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is one of the best horror movies there is, imo. Some people say it was the first horror movie. It can seriously fukk with your head. There's supposed to be a remake of it coming out soon, but I don't see how it's going to work.

Cool thread. Several good movies have been listed here. But two movies that just seemed to scare the willys out of me, are Piranna and Attack of the Killer Bees. Both movies are complete cheese but like Jaws they just touched a nerve.

When I was young some of these movies scared the crap out of me. Some of them were just spooky.

Trilogy of Terror - I wouldn't get of the couch because I was scared that little voodoo doll was going to cut my ankle with a knife.

The Exorcist - The obvious reasons. It's has to be the scariest to me.

Halloween - This one one did it's job well, definately scared.

Night Gallery - Don't remember any specific episode, probably because I would quickly change the channel, but I remember the opening scenes.

Poltergiest - The clown scene. Had many sleepless night and a ritual of looking under the bed at night.

Magic - a movie with Anthony Hopkins and a ventriliquist doll that was creepy looking.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - was odd and spooky.

The shinning - Wierd in a creepy way.

Salems Lot - Movie is a little dated, but the vampire boy scratching on the windows freaked me out.

Jaws - Didn't scare me that bad when I watched it, however made me think about it every damn time I go into the ocean!

Let's Scare Jessica To Death - I don't remeber much from it, but I'm pretty sure I scared me enough that I still remember it.

The newer movies don't do much for me anymore. They just don't make them like they used to. Sleepy Hollow was rather erie though, great atmoshpere.
