My 2 1/2 year old (Jack) was born with a birth defect in his bladder that would not allow any urine to pass through. He needed surgery to correct this ASAP right after he was born (6 weeks early). He spent his first two months in the new born ICU at Yale New Haven Hospital. They fixed his bladder, but the back flow of urine back up to his kidneys caused some kidney damage. According to the doctors we wouldn't know the full extent of the damage until he turned 2. That was this past Summer. His left Kidney seems to be functioning and growing as it should, but his right kidney was not functioning and not growing at all. He had surgery today to remove that kidney and the surgery went off without a hitch and he is doing fine tonight.
They will watch his left kidney over the next few years to make absolute certain that it is functioning as it should. At this point, things look really good.
My wife and I are sooooo relieved. This was considered an elective surgery and limited risk, but we were very nervous about the whole thing. He is a very passive little guy and handled all of this like a champ. My wife is staying with him at the hospital tonight.
Since I've made so many friends in the short time I've been here, I thought I'd share our good news with all of you.
