Re: A/V geeks, need your help

One last thing. This is probably the best place on the net to get THE authoritative answers on your avs questions: www.avsforum.com.

Just preface your question with "I'm a noob", and they'll be careful to use small words for ya.

Re: A/V geeks, need your help

On my old computer I installed a video tuner card and tried to make DVD's with it. After maybe 15 minutes it would go out of synch. I bought an HP Media Center with everything preinstalled and I have had no problems at all with synchronizing. I made a couple of home movie DVD's each a little over an hour long with footage captured from my camcorder and they came out flawless. I really liked the Arcsoft Showbiz software that was included too.

The way your talking( My dvd can burn Hd) I assume you have a new mac. 1st tell me what you have, G4/G5 whatever, when did you get it. Also I doubt you have a HD DVD Burner(if you did you would not be asking us about vcr transfers) as those are not consumer ready yet. Will be, but not yet. I think your confusing your Imovie HD and the new Ilife apps, that can handle HD(apple getting ready fot the HD burners) content as a HD DVD burner. Anyways if it's a newer Mac you definately have USB 2.0 and the converter I showed you will work for you. Price wise these things seem to start at about a hundred bucks all the way on up to the 1000's. Now you have to decide if it's worth it for you. If your only going to do a tape or 2 probably not, if you have alot of stuff and you want to edit it then probably so. You may also want to just look at a vcr/dvd bruner combo, all that stuff is so inexpensive now.

ahhh, yeah, that makes sense. just got ilife 05, and assumed that it was the same kinda thing. i have a dual500mhz g4 that i bought from a friend of mine.

sounds like it's gonna be a better bet to get a standalone thingy! then again, i'd probably want to do some editing.

You probably don't have USB 2.0 as the dual g4 500 is an older model, Apple only started using 2.0 in the last 2 years. It would probably be easier to just get a dual vcr/dvd combo. Or if you have a digital camcorder run the vcr to the camcorder, record it, then tranfer it via firewire to Imovie and then go to town and burn it to DVD. These seem to be the easiest most econimical ways. Now if money is no object there are lots of options that will let you do anything you want.

The iMovie to iDVD burn time makes using that combo for VHS archiving a non-starter IMO. Jamming a railroad spike through your temple might cross your mind after like the 3rd one.
