John, everyone's suggestion to boot from CD is the best thing.

Important note:
I'm assuming here that you have already used the product key for your existing XP Pro machine and that it is not a volume license key. If that's correct then you are still not going to be successful with this installation for very long unless you acquire another valid Windows XP Pro product key. The XP Home product key that came with the machine will not work with XP Pro. You will be able to run for a period of time without activating the Windows installation but eventually you will need to come up with another product key.

[/ QUOTE ]

And if this is the notorious hacked xp pro key (fckgw-etc.) then you will not be able to upgrade to service pack 1. If this is a problem, pm me and I can help. Btw, its a lot easier to fix this before the install is complete rather than after.

FYI: While piracy seems to be a common issue throughout the internet I would appreciate it not be brought into the JCF. I cannot and will not allow this type of behaviour and allow us to be shutdown because of complaints with the BSA. Futhermore any member violating this policy will not be warned but will in fact lose their membership rights to the JCF indefinetly....

John, stick your CD in your other machine and verify that you can boot from it - just want to eliminate the possibility of a bad CD.

What does the system think all the drives are in the system? Go to the BIOS setup and see if it correctly identifies the hard drive(s) and CD drive. Can you get any sort of diagnostic tools from the IBM web site?

Press any key then follow the prompts. Don't do a repair. Do a new install. That should do it.

Wow, sorry bout that. Not looking to get anyone in any trouble. I was just gonna point the guy to a site that explains all that stuff. Its kinda common knowledge. Just trying to help out a bro. Wont happen again. I see that the registry cleaner thread has been attended to also. Point taken, once again sorry, it wont happen again

Re: Computer Help

I am at a total loss now. I am still getting the computer hanging up on "Press any key to boot from CD.."
If I let it sit for several minutes it reads a non-system disk error and eventually I get the same DOS looking screen that has an error message at the top of it that starts with 1962 and the screen has a large picture of a computer with the F commands listed across the bottom of it. There is an arrow flashing to push the F1 key.

Do you have another CDRom to try? I don't think that's it since BIOS recognizes it, but, it's something simple to try. What about different media?

Can you install Win98?

I still want to point to the board tho...

Re: Computer Help

I tried a Windows 2000 disk and it read non-system disk.
Just to be clear, here are the facts:
I got the computer because the person who owned it said that she must have gooten a virus that screwed her computer up.
When I booted it up it would load the opening page of Windows XP Home but you could only see a boarder of blue. The majority of the screen was white. The Help key worked but it would only display the round help button itself. If I pushed the off button on the computer the shut down/hibernation prompt box came on. If I hold the button in the computer would shut off.
I decided to be better safe than sorry so I formatted the hard drive like this:
I used a Win 98 boot disk to get to the A prompt
I switched the prompt to C and typed Format C:
It took around 40 minutes to format.
It verified that I had approx 38+ gb of hard space (it is a 40 gig hard drive)
I ran Fdisk and followed the prompts and it told me that the hard drive has already been partitioned.
So far... so good... Right?
The Bios correctly identifies all the drives, processor etc..
I assume that now I need to intall an operating system but I am so far unsuccessful. Did I forget to do something? Could the hard drive be bad? A bad board? I changed the bios so that it would boot from the CD and I put my XP PRO disk in but it just hangs up with "Press any key to boot from CD.."
Not cool..

I'm still pointing at the board...

It sounds to me like you've covered everything, all of the obvious anyway.

I say board... throw that drive in a working machine and see if you can get past where you've already been with this box. One way of making sure the drive is good and it won't create any problems with the known, good box. Make sure to unplug the current drive(s) from the working amchines first.

Could be a bad hard drive. Is it making noise?
