Re: Need some suggestions for a guitar for me!

Hey, if anyone here starts buying people PRS's Tekky, or not, they can *shudder* sleep with me.

No seriously, all the suggestions are true about the fusions and all of that, but I really don't know if being petite requires a smaller guitar. Looking at your picture, you do not look too tiny for a guitar (anyway that comes out, it sounds bad, so rest assured, it's not). You're hands look to be of a good size (on the guitar I'm seeing, may be different, and I'm sure Tekky can tell you better, or maybe someone else that you guys hang out with).

Maybe play a few of Teks guitars (sorry Tekky, I don't know what guitars you have) and see if there's a particular neck shape or style you like. Maybe if he has maple boards, and ebony boards, and rosewood, you can get a feel for a finger board you like, and a fret size you like. Maybe you don't want too heavy a guitar (in which case, if you played either of my strats you wouldn't want them because they weigh a lot) so you need something a little lighter, in the neighborhood of a Dinky or Ibanez (yeah boo me) RG series guitar. Maybe the neck on the dinky or Ibanez is too thin, so you go with one of the lower model Ibanez guitars, without a wizard neck (or an upper model without one) and add whatever you like to it.

Bottom line, it looks to me, that your hands can hangle a 25.5 inch scale length just fine, and 3/4 inch over all the frets is NOT that big of a difference (at least to me) and I've got small hands, I just measured (I'm adding bookshelves to my house, so don't think anything perverted!) 7 inches from the end of my palm to my middle finger end, all my guitars have 25.5 inch scale lenth.

Next step to look at is action, what kind of action do you like (play to find out) super low, medium low, low, medium, or high? I personally like a low/medium. I can play ANY low actioned guitar, but I like a little bit of grab on mine (then again my favorite guitar has super low action).

What kind of trem will you like, you've got to play different guitars, stop bars, floyds, vintage styled, wilkonsons, just experiment around, I'm sure a trip you and Tekky would both love is to go to the music store, and just play around with guitars.

A; he'd look cooler than most of the guys in there (look, I'm bringing my girlfriend (not sure if you guys are more than or engaged or something, so please don't be offended) to play guitars, what are you butt sniffers doing?

B; you won't be bored, neither will he

C; you'll get to play different guitars, while he brags about his guitar playing girl, a win win win for everyone!

I personally don't know how serious you are about guitars, but I'd start out with something light, anyone here can tell you, SUPER deals can be had on some J/C guitars.

My advice? If it has a Kahler, it sucks :P (not true, I just don't like em)

Your suggestions are for HER to buy ME a guitar... She's using the board to get ME to buy HER a guitar... She's not only beautiful, but she's pretty sneaky too.

Re: Need some suggestions for a guitar for me!

But it's a GOOD kinda sneaky, Todd! You realize being her guitar guru will be just one more deep bond between y'all, right? You have to go with the flow, I think it will come back to you manyfold!........... I still suggest the 24.75" scale; it won't be unduly short for Todd if he wants to check it out, but for Kristi, especially as a beginner, those slight differences can make a difference starting out, for stretches especially. Try playing a C minor arpeggio where you play the 3rd fret G, then 8th fret C on the high E string. My fingers are short enough that that's a tough stretch for me, and I'm 6' tall and have played for awhile. Granted she may not be playing arpeggios right away, but why not have the extra millimeters per fret that will make it more playable? I'd definitely say at least try both, with a few fret stretches to get an idea of her stretch range. That might matter more to staying interested than what it looks like, or what we would personally want.

Re: Need some suggestions for a guitar for me!

I don't know.. she strikes me as an SG kind of gal or maybe a MM, like a silhouette, or an Axis, not sure if I'd want a trem starting out.

I'm not sure what skill level were talking here. Most of us had more beginners instruments which were of a entry level scale. But since this is a special gift, it should reflect that as well.

Even starting out.. one has preferences. Body shape, Hums vs singles, bridge type, scale, headstock shape and orientation. I find you're rather focused on these things at first because developing a fit to how your hands and body adapt to the instrument is something you tend to focus upon when learning. When I started, pickup placement (I didn't care for strat, singles weren't rock enough and the middle coil -in the way) and scale, (again, didn't care for a strat) as well as how well it tuned and held tuning.
At the very least, it should be, easy to tune, very stable in holding tuning and playable in shape and action to her so one can develope interest to stretch out and explore comfortably. MM I found is very good in the weight and fatigue area..you can play them for hours and not feel discomfort of any sort. (why I do not own one yet is beyond me)

Musicman has that new model out.. 'Sub' (no pun intended but you could definitely insert one)...
that seems like a decent axe. I guess GC had these on clearance for a good price, possibly some JCF GC employee could swing ya a deal for a special occasion.

Re: Need some suggestions for a guitar for me!

She's just starting to learn. I've taught her how to play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on my acoustic. (Fender Montara) Every other weekend when she's at my place she practices. (and I have to teach it to her again )

The picture of the Custom Shop Strat and the picture of her with the Soloist and Mike (the painter of the aforementioned soloist - I forgot his last name) are two of her favorite guitars from NAMM. Needless to say, IF I get her a guitar for her birthday, it'll probably be a Charvel or Jackson.

Since she's on an acoustic..maybe a acous/elec - 550, 625C or an ATX if you can find one.

Re: Need some suggestions for a guitar for me!

There are lots of good ideas in here! I'm not exactly sure what I want or prefer because I am just totally starting out. I want something that looks and plays nice. I'm making Todd do all my set-ups for me. And I plan to keep it for a long time. I am one of those lucky people with long fingers - I used to get told I show play piano. The only reach problem I have right now is that I broke the pinkie on my left hand and of course I'm right handed.

And I am not sneaky! I am just coming up with ideas for my birthday cause I know people are going to be asking. I am not trying to get someone to buy me a guitar, but should I happen to get one for my b-day, that would totally be awesome!

ditto. if she's starting out, she's going to have the most fun laying down the rhythm for tekky in an ensemble situation. that means chording. that can mean some big stretches as she increases her chord vocabulary. definitely short scale IMO.
