You Gotta Like This Guy!

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO
HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF
AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER.

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail":

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

    More on the Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 = years. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"

Sheriff Joe was just reelected Sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona.

Here's to you sheriff Keep up the good work.

some of the things are questionable the 138 degree heat is a little extreme and why cut off the weights? Other than that I think everything is awesome except they should not be allowed the disney channel it will get the guys on a a kiddie beef to excited. It really is the proper step though for prisoners IMO

Re: The Man Who Needs To Be The Next President

Tets there are plenty of families in the Phoenix area who suffer that kind of heat in their non-air-conditioned homes in the summer. If it's good enough for the poor, it's good enough for the prisoners.

While I don't disagree at all with Sheriff Joe's treatment of his Tent City inmates it's worth noting that lots of folks there are awaiting trial and are either actually innocent or will eventually be acquitted. If you get rung up on a serious felony (state or federal) in AZ you'll almost certainly go to a normal state or federal prison where you'll enjoy air conditioning, weights, porn, cigarettes, and good food.

Couple of other interesting features of the AZ justice system (via a friend who's a criminal defense attorney over there): 1. if you're busted for your first DUI it may be a misdemeanor or felony but if you have a few unpaid parking tickets that's an aggravating circumstance and you'll be rung up for a felony 100% of the time becuase you're obviously a dangerous person who should be subjected to the mandatory minimum sentencing laws; 2. if you kill someone and are convicted of manslaughter eventually, after a period of years have passed, the conviction can't be used against you in a later prosecution for another crime; if you got a DUI the day after you got home following WWII and you get another one today that first one will be used against you as an aggravating circumstance and you'll be rung up for a felony and subject to the state's mandatory minimum sentencing laws. In other words, in AZ parking tickets can make you a felon and actually killing someone is viewed by the law as a less serious offense than having one too many beers before driving home. Just a little perspective for the non-AZ residents in the crowd.

Yeah, well I think a woman should be president.

The sentencing laws for most everything need to be rewritten. And I think all the crap that prisoner get is BS. Hell, I've had less than most prisoners at points in my life. And I have never been guaranteed cable. In fact there have been a lot of time I could afford cable and yet these guys get it. I have no sympathy for those found guilty - especially of violent crimes. Take the luxuries away. They don't deserve cable. Or porn. Or anything else. Feed them, clothe them, and put a roof over their heads. They don't need anything else.

I think you and Em should just take my suggestion and open a re-education camp for women. The amount of good you could do right here in Northern California alone is almost beyond comprehension.

YAO I do have no problem with it but 138 is a bit extreme but if you are supposed to be there you should suffer IMO... I got no problem.. At least they get pink boxers...

I voted for Michael Badnarik, the Libertarian Party candidate, for president this time. His view on prisons is that he would make the inmates lay in bed full time for the first couple of months to allow their muscles to atrophy, them put them to work. His reasoning was, "why allow them to work out with weights and become stronger criminals?"

Sheriff Joe is great. I remember when he got a great deal on Corn dogs, and fed them corn dogs 3 times a day for a while. Of course, they bitched about it.

I do remember a news story about a prisoner dying in the tents, with allegations of negligence by the guards.

                            That sheriff is pretty funny!

I supported Michael Badnarik in the last election though, and think I'll stay libertarian for the forseeable future.
