You know, I have my disagreements at times with what goes on but I find the admins are very even handed in judgement of situations and attempt to regard being fair and just in punishment when limits are broken. More often than not, you do get a warning and I have to say, I've seen those limits tested. I'm sure I've pushed the envelope a few times. Generally those are the same limits you would not test in public or would be considered kosher in a social situation. I usually do not see them getting to bent or taking action w/o fair warning.. but then again, the offensive evidence is usually removed, so I can't really open the case for examination..it ain't my board, just a place I hang out at. Thanks for starting this thread about the JCF admins. They do a fantastic job that offers long hours, little pay, no chance for advancement, no reserved parking space, and the most demanding boss of them all: 4,000 screaming members.

Perhaps the most difficult task of admins is deciding where to draw the lines and actually identifying and dealing with people who step over them.

For instance, the "Non C-J Related Talk" area is a good place to look. The idea behind this section is for discussions falling outside Guitar/Amp/Music talk. Now, this board exists for the sole purpose of providing a place to discuss Charvel guitars, Jackson guitars, and all the peripheral topics such as stars who play them, guitars we see for sale, amps they are played through, technical resources, etc. etc. There is no actual need to have a non-CJ area as there are literally thousands of boards out there that cover sports, cars, motorcycles, guns, and whatever else we rattle on about. Sure there is comeraderie here and as people get to know each other they find other common interests as described above. This really is the intent (at least it was in my mind when we put it in place way back when) of the Non CJ section.

Here is where the grey line comes in. In many instances we see threads that bring up issues and topics addressing racial, social, sexual, and political views. Speaking generally, the discussions in these threads commonly exhibit divisive characteristics. This is exacerbated by the fact that many who feel compelled to contribute to these kinds of threads have extreme views on these subjects and do not always demonstrate diplomacy in voicing their opinions. So the question is where is the line between:

responsible administration <-> censorship

The administrators of this board need to make decisions about the type of environment this board should be for people visit, read, learn, and meet others. Those decisions and the vision for the JCF are reflected in the actions they take on a day to day basis in terms of membership, thread, and post administration. My feeling is that with a board this large, the administrators have to (and have demonstrated a willingness to) aggressively limit threads, posts, and even members that/who tend to stray into conflict (outside of the forum's core purpose) and away from our core mission: discussion of J/C guitars. This is especially so with divisive topics and even more especially so when those topics are used for the sole purpose of calling people out or baiting others. There will always be those who call such actions "censorship" and those who will always rally around the banned or suspended members...regardless of who it is or the circumstances around the administrative action. Those folks have an absolute right to feel this way and it makes sense for those folks who have burning desires to discuss and debate their views about topics that are determined to be "too hot" for the JCF to go find other outlets and forums dedicated to those topics. Here we have another grey area...what is "too hot" and what is not?

My personal opinion is this is a guitar oriented discussion forum. It is great to see when members with common threads of these great guitars and basses find in each other even more common threads. It is all about relationship building which to me is even more important and lasting than the very subject we strive to focus on: guitars! My personal opinion is that the focus of this board was never intended to be a stump or a platform for those with extreme views to voice their opinions outside of our core focus. There again comes a grey area...what is an "extreme" view?

There are no definitions and no rules that dictate what an "extreme" view is or what a "too hot" topic is or even what kind of topic is acceptable or not. This is where the human element enters the equation when admins must make calls on such things relevant to the vision of what this board is supposed to be.

The admins have done the best job possible of posting rules about how members should be acting here at the JCF and that is the jumping off point for administrative decisions. Ultimately there comes a time to "make the call." Given the long history of this forum, the fact that it is so established, so active, and generally an outstanding place to visit THE ADMINS HAVE TO BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT! Right?

I am not saying that this has to be a rosy sunshiney place all the time. I know I have extreme views on San Dimas Charvel guitars, Soldano amps, and lemon oil but in context of the purpose of this board...let me at 'em! Some of the best learning experiences I've had on this board and some of the most off the wall discoveries and information have resulted from heated exchanges. The fact of the matter is when the framers of the JCF put it all together, they were not interested in providing a place for social issue discourse and discussion. It was/is all about the guitars, baby!

I do think there are some members here who would do well to review their post history and take inventory of where they contribute to this board and in what manner. Those folks who find themselves on the sidelines of the guitar topics and in the thick of the social issues may want to consider if this is the best outlet for them given the focus of their attention. In certain circumstances, these people are inevitably going to have run-ins with admins and potentially be dissatisfied with the what they are getting out of the JCF. These may just be the same people who wonder why they can't have a Whopper at McDonald's.

They are not wrong, they're just in the wrong place.

How many times have you guys said or have seen someone say how great this board is?
To many times to count. One large reason is because of what the admins do behind the scenes. We take for granted the hard work that is put in to keeping this board up and running. I think they do a hell of a job.
We all see the nut noosing and other various bannings that takes place, some we all laugh at. Some people question. When it is a dirt bag or a trouble maker we applaud the admins swift action but when is it someone who is known to most of us, some get upset.
No one asked any of us to join. We did it voluntarily, therefore we should abide by the rules that were set in place before we became members here.
Admins keep up the good work. Thanks for the great board.
Now I must go and wash my nose off I have a little something stinky on it.

I don't know if I've said it elsewhere (my memory tends to suck), but the JCF is by far the best forum I have been a part of.

I always come here first with my questions because I know I will get honest and informed answers. It's incredible the amount of valuable information one can find here.
I have a lot of respect for many people around here and I appreciate those that can contribute to help us bottom feeders.
And despite the funnies and the banters, this is a mature place and I feel comfortable here.

I have no problem whatsoever with the admins rules or censorship on this board and I am confident that this board is better because of it.
