OK, I know everyone here likes to post their show reviews, so I thought I might add one.
Yesterday was Suffocation/Behemoth/Cattle Decapitation/Intestinal Strangulation/Winterthrall at the Key Club on Sunset Blvd. I started my day when Diego from Disgorge showed up at my house, then we took my car to my band practice. I played an OK set, but I was bummed we had no weed, so I wasn't feelin' it. Anyways, I started puttin' away beers knowing my playing was just getting crappier. Finally we were done with the last song and just had been jammin' on whatever for a few minutes, then Diego came over and I hotswapped my guitar over to him, and he and Alex played for like 20 minutes without stopping. They jammed on all kinds of riffs and shit Diego was just jammin'. It was totally cool, but kinda like watching someone else drill your girl in a weird way. Anyways, Diego had a rough mix of the new Disgorge album and it sounded fuckin' CRUSHING!!! Not one to be missed.
Anyways we went to the show and I was supposed to pick up a ticket from Liz from Winterthrall, but she had to turn them in. Fortunately her singer had a spare backstage bracelet. SCORE! Not only didn't I pay, I had all access. I must say that since I did L.A. Metal I have yet to pay for a show at the Key Club or fail to get all access. I always know at least two bands on any death metal tour, and someone has a bracelet for me. Beer too!!
Anyways I bought a few beers for me and Kevin Fetus at the bar, but at $6 apiece, that got expensive quick, so I went backstage to hang out with my friends Travis from Cattle Decapitation and ole Nick Barker from, well, maybe a few bands you've heard of. I drank Travis' beer because they were free, and someone handed me a primo. If you don't know what that is, I'm not going to tell you. Anyways I was pretty fuckin' buzzed by the time Suffo went onstage. I don't know if you've guys have noticed, but I have a Suffocation tattoo, and this was my FIRST chance ever to see them live. Last time they came through L.A. I was on tour at the exact same time, so we constantly missed each other. Before they broke up I was in the USMC in Japan and had no way of making it to a show.
I went so nuts in that pit that I chipped my teeth, almost knocked two dudes out, and have a sore body covered in bruises and strains. And about a quarter of a black eye. I obeyed and enforced the old school rules though and tried my hardest not to hurt anyone, but in a pit, shit happens. Anyways, Suffo sounded fuckin GOOD. Frank looked like he belonged on that stage. The whole band was super tight. It was really worth the seven years of waiting to see them.
Ricky from Disgorge and Nick and a few more of us went to the Rainbow for about an hour until two, then we all ended up back on the Suffocation bus. We ended up leaving at 4 am. Diego was totally sober, so he was our DD and got our crazy asses home safe. Ricky and I ended up passing out around 7 am.
Today I am a bit sore, but fuggit, as Bill might say. Fucken Metal!! \\m//
