• College is kicking my ass :(

I think I'm going to have to sell my 2 guitars for a lesser one. I need money for college, and work is really crappy right now. I'm getting 20 hours a week since its retail. How will i deal with parting with my LPC I guess I would go for a Model 5/6 or something.

Anyone have to do this in times like this?

I went back to grad school after working for a few years. A couple of years in I looked at: the guitars, the bike, and the car ... and sold the car.

Get a band and play for money.

Get a higher-paying factory job. They suck, but they pay well. Most places will also work with your school schedule.

Michael there should be a financial aid office in your school...go there and talk to an advisor about your options. You'll have to fill out a FAFSA form, and do a few other things, but more than likely you can get some need-based grants and loans, as well as academic ones. I'm putting myself thru college right now and I'm gonna be in hella debt when I get out but it will all pay off in the end. Good luck.

Look at it this way, when you have a degree you can get a better paying job and buy another one. Education is more important than a guitar - especially one you can get later on.

Wait tables. When I was a senior in college I got a job waiting tables, and I can't believe it took me so long. The job was easy, the people were awesome, and I got cash every night. On a good night I could pocket a hundred bucks easy.

As an added benefit, I found out that nobody parties like a restaurant crew. Even on a week night, the hedonism and debauchery that went on was the stuff of legend. If people really knew what happened on those table they wouldn't think of eating there

Of course, I lived pretty large that year. When I graduated I needed money to move and sold my rack rig and my 4x12 I did manage to keep my guitars.

I also borrowed money for college. It seems like a lot of money, but your income potential is so much higher. It is very much worth taking out student loans if you graduate with a useful degree.

The Engineering Major asks..."How does it happen?"

The Business Major asks..."How can we make it successful?"

The Art Major asks..."Do you want fries with that?"

No offense to any art majors

Re: College is kicking my ass

I've been in a very similar situation. In 1997, just after I got out of law school, I had to start payment on my massive student loans--which I'll be repaying until I'm an old man--and I was only making about $25K per year as an attorney for a nonprofit group fighting to protect people's property rights. One month, in order to pay the rent, I had to sell my beautiful, amazing 1981 LPC Black Beauty. It was one of the five best guitars I've ever owned (and I've had a lot of 'em). That still hurts me to this day.

But, y'know what? The loss of that LPC helped spur me back into J/C guitars, since I eventually got a Jackson '88 Ltd. Ed. and then a Model 5. Now, when I play Les Pauls, they feel like massive, clumsy blocks of wood. Though they still sound fantastic.

It hurts to *have* to sell something that nice. But think of it this way--there is certainly no shortage of LPCs out there, and there will be a nice one waiting for you somewhere when you get the $$$ to buy one again.

I'm with txcharvel, wait tables or just find a temp. job that you can make tips. I used to deliver pizza for side money and I used to go home every night with anywhere form $60-$120 in my pocket every time I worked. That was just tips. With my regular pay added in it turned out to be something like $16/hour....to drive around. You can probably make alot more if you live in a bigger city. I delivered in a town where the pop. was around 11,000 people.

NIU?? Northern Illinois University??? I went there for a summer football program years ago.

As far as paying for college, just think of this... When you get out of college, you'll have the skills to leave your retail job in the dust. It won't happen overnight, but this is all part of paying dues. When you get a better job, you can buy a LPC or any other guitar your heart desires.

get a management position in your retail store-or another one. Or get trained in another department and pick up some extra hours as a cashier or janitor or whatever. Don't sell your crap. I make almost 9 bucks an hour at my part-time retail job. All I do is put fish in a plastic bag and collect my cash everyweek. Getting a job where you make tips is also good-mind you, sometimes you will bust your butt to get it. Good Luck!

Boxcar and Txcharvel have great ideas. Get all the financial aid you can, and do the waiter thing and make some tip money. Most people have trouble adjusting to college both financially and studiously. Don't over-party and get your work done before you go out. If you can get in a gigging band that's great, buit you will probably make more waiting tables, with less hassle. You just do your job, get your tips and go home. Bands are never that simple.

Don't worry, you'll adjust and get the money sitch in line. Maybe if you jump on it you won't have to sell the guitar.

I worked at restaraunts all through undergrad. Waiting tables and bartending are the best jobs for students to have. It's fast cash and offers the best $/hour that anyone in your position can get. Plus, people are ALWAYS ready to give up shifts or go home early.
