Okay Okay. Lemme explain. The concept is alright by me... the whole "lovey-dovey celebrate your romance" crap. Sure, I can buy that. It's nice to give your gal some flowers or y'all go out to dinner... blah blah blah.
But I think its lame that we all have to celebrate this day together! There is an actual holiday and market for all this crap!! [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]
I know there is some sort of history, St. Valentine... I remember something about some bloody murders one time too... I don't remember exactly.

But holidays like Halloween, winter holidays, and spring holidays all have something to do with a changing of the season or some religious deal... but Valentine's Day... I just don't get it.

Basically I think it's weird we all have to have sex on the same night all over the USA. And I think it's lame that lovers HAVE to buy each other stuff that is red and heart shaped or chocolate on one particular day a year. [img]/images/graemlins/what.gif[/img]

I usually think it's another dumb Hallmark holiday for the economy to rake big bucks in, but this year, I'm actually doing something. I am giving a certain girl an origami folded rose. Here's the prototype that I worked on today...

Essentially, it's "free", which means I'm not perpetuating the Hallmark holiday thing by buying roses/candy/gifts, but in reality, I have to go to the local Hallmark store to buy fancy tissue paper to make the real rose/stem tomorrow since I have none at home. nope, not just you. Although, if I've ever tried to explain myself to the girls at work, I get "oh, so you forgot to get something for the wife this year, huh?" Like I'm just making excuses for forgetting or something. [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] In our relationship, I'm the one who remembers anniversaries & birthdays. Who the hell can forget Valentine's Day when you're constantly bombarded by advertising from every side? I actually commented on that last night to the wife. We were watching tv and an ad for a jeweller's came on. The ad wasn't about spoiling each other with expensive gifts for VD - it was (as usual) about the guy spoiling the girl.

btw, how long have they been advertising Easter in your area? I think the eggs started to appear in the stores right after they put away the Xmas clearance stocks around here

Yeah, it's starting to get ridiculous. Advertising for holidays/events starts earlier and earlier, I've noticed. I've seen "Back To School" sales start in the first week after school has JUST finished. [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] What a great way to make the kids feel good about their upcoming summer, by hunting for school supplies right after they're done their final examinations! It is not just you. Totally commercialized. Hallmark, Seed’s candy, jewelry stores and FDS are behind it. The sex part, I have no problem with. Instead of chocolate, it is the perfect time to introduce a new sex toy in the mix. It also gives you the perfect excuse to buy a porno DVD that you may be nervous to bring home out of the blue.

I dunno... I just think that V-Day is really lousy because, you're right G, its all about the guy spoiling the girl and it is NOT fair. I hate it. I honestly do. Sure, I like to be spoiled but I think it's unfair to force men into feeling guilty if they do not celebrate this holiday.

I think if you want to get your lover something to show them you love them, then it should be on your terms. Not just because it says you have to on the calendar.

Here ya go!! This would be my plan if I ruled Supreme over the calendar as we know it:

If you are in a relationship and have an anniversary- then you celebrate a Valentiney kinda day ON your anniversary.

If you DON'T have an anniversary with your significant other- then you can celebrate by doing something cool on the default holiday- V-Day in Feb.

And if you are not in a special relationship with someone then you get some sort of free prize on V-Day.

Contrary to popular belief Valentine's Day was created for men. Y'see, birthdays, anniversaries, and other very personal special days all suffer from one massive drawback: they fall on different days with each new wife/girlfriend. While nearly all women can easily remember hundreds of such dates associated with hundreds of different people, it's rare to find a man who can remember what color socks he put on that morning (provided of course that there is more than a single color in the drawer) much less the day(s) of the year on which got married / met someone special.

The following is an actual conversation that occurred at a monthly firm dinner while I was employed with a large firm:

A, with a look of abject horror on his face, "What day is it?"
"Wednesday."
"No, what day of the month?"
"The 18th, why did you forget an appointment with a client?"
With an even more stricken expression A added, "I suppose the 18th comes after the 14th again this month doesn't it?"
"Normally. Why?"
"I forgot my anniversary ... again."
"Which one was this?"
"20th."
"You're screwed. Has she said anything?"
"No."
"Four days and not a single word? Has she been trying to serve you with any papers?"
"Not yet."
"Maui. Two weeks minimum, it's your only chance. You'd best get on the horn with your travel agent right now."

A literally runs out of the restaurant while shouting into his cell phone. And the wife he couldn't remember? Former model, completely hot, and a total sweetheart. But that guy represents a good solid 90% of the male population of the universe.

But Valentine's Day, that one's easy. It's always on February 14th and that date is drilled into the head of every male who grows up in the US via our fine public education establishment. [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

I always thought it was funny how my ex G/F was such an "independent, liberated, equal rights chick" (Which is a good thing) but when it came to V-Day it was all about her. [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

I took her to a B&B once and I vowed to myself that was the last thing I would do with her for V-Day and it was.

We had been talking about how we would eat, hit the hot tub, watch "part" of a movie then move to the bed room...Oh she was talking big all that week. [img]/images/graemlins/eyes.gif[/img]

I come home after work and she had tipped a few beer back already so, by the time we get there she says she wants to lay on the couch and watch the movie for a bit first. 10 minutes later she’s SLEEPING!

I kept waking her up but she would go right back to sleep...

I was pissed! I woke her and said that I thought it was pretty damn lame that I set this up so I could watch her sleep on the couch and that it was so nice of her to start celebrating while I was at work. Then I said I'm going to bed and that’s where I went.

She obviously felt bad and came into the room, where I for the first time did NOT feel like having sex. Then something came over me and I thought "Fukk this!" I let her do her thing to try and smooth me over, than I gave her the most un loving, spiteful, raunchy sex she had ever had. She thought I was alright but, I was maaaad! I still get mad thinking about it, it killed something that night.
