I stayed in an old hotel once that was like eight feet from a busy highway. They had replaced the windows with double-paned glass (which helps with energy costs, too), then they screwed down a big sheet of plexiglass over the whole window frame, which was sealed around the edges with silicone. Topped it all off with some heavy, heavy curtains. There were big trucks going by all night, but I didn't hear a thing.

Re: Soundproofing Question
Thanks so much you guys! I knew y'all'd have some grand ideas!
Necro- good idea with the window, I read something similar in the link Pat gave me too. I would have to check on the fire code for that one since it would maybe make the window un-usable.
Endrik- KILLER link to the soundproof foam!! Woah! Good prices too. Thanks so much!
We have some ideas to work with, so I think I may be able to retain some measure of my sanity (what was there to begin with anyway).
Some good ideas for the studio too... thank you!

P.S. That earplug dispenser is still cracking me up!

Re: Soundproofing Question
Holy crap, you must live in my neighborhood! My wife spends about 5 nights a week sleeping in the kids rooms because they have humidifiers to block out the noise of those damn dogs. I always say I'm going to "D-Con meatball" the whole neighborhood, but haven't done it yet.
Actually, if you get crazy enough to d-con the dogs, it won't work. We had some rats living under the shed. I bought the d-con, they ate it and pooped green for week but it didn't kill them. Turns out vitamin K is an anti-dote for rat poison, and dog food is high in vitamin K. All the freakin dogs in the neighborhood supply the rats with plenty of food to counteract the poison.
If you find a got way to soundproof the room, PLEASE post back here. It would be nice to have the missus around once in a while.
