This pro bass player/instructor that I know met some chick in an online dating service. He had a house, killer gear, and a serious reputation as a musician (I'm not going to show you his site out of respect for his privacy). They got married a few months back, no prenup. She convinces him to sell his house and move to CO with her. I was there at the move out party. Once in CO she files for divorce like after 2 months of marriage and gets basically more than half of everything he brought into the marriage, which is basically over half of the proceeds from the sale of his house. He's now homeless! She wiped him out! Can you fukking believe that? [img]/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]

The kicker is that he recently turned in his rock and roll life style for Christianity and it was a Christian singles site where he met this woman! That place must be fertile soil for these kind of women... [img]/images/graemlins/eviltongue.gif[/img]

Apologies to all the women in this forum. I know this is not representative of the fairer sex. I just can't believe our laws can let this happen after a 2 month marriage that was obviously premiditated to clean this guy out.

What RacerX said!!! Gene Simmons also shares this philosophy. I remember seeing an interview with him about it.

- keep in mind, marriage is nothing but a civil legal contract! It makes your assets all joint, and it also give both parties legal empowerment in situations such as medical power of attorney, etc... unless of course you have a prenup agreement.
If you want to have a spiritual marriage, you can get those too, they have NO legal foundation at all. They are just that, spiritual, you get married by some dude who thinks he's a "holy man". You can get these anywhere, but they are very common to have done at tropical islands. I met a girl once that wanted one of these kinds of "marraiges". FYI I like the idea.

While this sucks totally, your buddy is partly to blame; he walked into it as blind and gullible target. He may as well tattooed come screw me on his forehead. One can’t be so desperate to use an online dating and two be too blinded by faith just because someone hides behind the Christianity mask. I’ve know preachers and ministers who were drunken womanizers hiding behind religion.

I for the life of me do not understand why people get married so fast, 9 times out of ten, if you get married fast, it ends fast. People usually end up getting married for all the wrong reasons. They get married because they are 30's and not married while their circle of friends are married and they are not, no reason to take the plunge too quickly. There are black widows out there just like this biotch who screwed this dude over looking for targets. Not realizing this and taking no steps to prevent it is totally stupid imho, prenuptial people, prenups. If the woman you are about to marry complains about it says you don't love her then end it there. Marriage has a 50-50 chance of making it regardless of all the circumstances involved, if you don’t believe the laws of average then your begging to be raped of ½ of your shit.

and when you want a prenup and the woman says:"dont you love me or trust me??" I say this very sincerely, "Well honey, I do love you, but if you truly love me, then the material things shouldnt matter and you should have no probelm with the prenup." One girl that wanted to marry me was in full support of a prenup, so you just have to find the right woman. they are out there.

Hey, the prenup works for her too! I dont want anything material of a woman, If I get married, I dont care what she has for money or material things, If I love her, I dont care what she has and I dont want it. Personally, I wouldnt get married without a prenup. I mean, even if I married a very rich woman who had WAY more than me, I would still want one....you never know, she may have got all that by getting it in divorces. Even if she was rich, I would still want a prenup to protect myself. I am not rich by any means, I dont have alot, but I have worked hard to get what I do have and I cant afford to lose it.

That really blows for your friend... it really does. I can understand why no one would want to get married, or if you do to make sure you have a pre-nup. This is a tough topic these days.

But I will say this:

It really and honestly is possible to marry your best friend, having absolutely no conditions put upon one another (pre-nup), and to have a long-lasting and good life together. Marriage isn't all hunky-dory. It isn't something you go into thinking that now that you have someone in your life that you don't have to ever do anything else. No. You still have to work together and take responsibility for yourself and respect your loved one and yourself. I think respecting your partner is the most important thing. If you meet someone who wants to change you and can't respect what you do or who you are- then move on. And that goes both ways.
That's just my opinion.

So to those who are looking, please don't feel discouraged. It is all about respect and your attitude (not taking everything so seriously... both of you) and having a good sense of humor! I really believe this. It has, after all, helped the Keith and I stay married for 10 years living a very trying, but very good life. [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

I agree Em. I had no prenup when I got married but I lived with my wife for 5 years before making it official, it was common law already anyway and I didn't have the assets I now have. We have been together since 87, so there is proof that it can work. Yes it isn't always easy either but thats life.

If I were single I wouldnt say I'd would never get married just because people got screwed over in a failed marriage. I would take the proper steps to protect myself though if I did.

People often give up on marriage too fast because it has become accepted that 1/2 of them fail. I hate seeing it especially when chldren are involved. Its selfish if you ask me. My wifes friend and a neighbor across the street just served her husband with divorce papers, he didnt see it coming, they have one pre-school child and one in 5th grade, I feel so bad for those kids because their lives are going to be turned upside down because their parents couldn't work on their differences or find a better solution than divorce.

Well, this is just more of a reason for me not to get married, but I do like the idea of living with the person for awhile before making it formal. Sounds reasonable

SO is common law marraige only in some states??? or what? I know for a fact that Michigan does NOT recognize common law marraige. I have researched it in the state marraige laws here. Just curious what states do? or dont?

I am not saying I wont get married, but I will protect myself if I do. To be frank, any woman I marry will probably have a similar attitude on it and want to protect herself too. The last girl I was in a relationship with wanted a prenup which was cool.She didnt want anything of my personal possesions. She had been previously divorced, so she knew how it worked. She just wanted to protect herself too as she supported herself and had her own house. She wanted kids if we got married, and I didnt....end of relationship.

And I agree on the kid thing....that can ruin a child life having split parents.

I have never had any desire to be a father. I think its great for the people that want kids. I just dont have the patience for raising a child. At least I admit it, leave it to the more qualified people, and dont raise children poorly!!!
