I love listening to Vai's playing as much as any of the other guys. I guess I just preferred working on Yngwie and Gilbert stuff because it seemed "easier" to learn since it was more scales, sequences,etc. and Vai is all over the place.

Bill, you've mentioned Jeff Loomis in a few of your posts. Is he a solo artist or in a band? Any info about him is appreciated. [img]/images/graemlins/toast.gif[/img]

I've heard the new Vai album and it kicks ass. Definitely not straightahead stuff--he's incorporating a lot of his Zappa influence on this album That's when he's at his best, in my opinion. Just tons of wonderful weirdness and amazing guitar-playing. Actually, I think that a smaller percentage of his playing on this album would qualify as 'wanking' than any of his other albums. Even the playing on the extended improvisational pieces is very musical and 'thru-composed'.

I will say, however, that if meat-and-potatos rock songs are your thing, this is NOT the album for you!

i don't think there is another guitarist who as much control over his guitar than steve vai. it pretty fuckin' ridiculous what he can do with one.

[/ QUOTE ]Jeff Loomis is the lead guitarist for Nevermore. He auditioned for Megadeth at age 16 but was too young for Dave, so Marty got the gig instead. His playing reminds me of Marty a little too. He's an incredible player.

I think that Alexi is the one of the guys who we shouldn't take seriously. Has Petrucci ever said anything bad about any other guitar player? NO. Alexi who is horrible "singer" and his leads are so BOORING and sound all the same should know more about what is music and what isn't.

Wow, that was a great issue of Guitar World! If they had more issues like that, I'd re-subscribe.

Alexi came off as a bit of an ass in that entire interview. And not one mention of Sinergy, which is the better of his two bands. Odd...

Steve Vai, on the other hand, is just a frikkin' genius. And his new album is amazing.
