    Re: Kick ass Vai quote

He's talking about the rock and roll lifestyle, having fun. He's refering to how they look when they play live. How people like JM just look bored when they play, as compared to the Live in Tokyo dvd, when there was alot more excitement.

    [ QUOTE ]
Alexi who is horrible "singer" and his leads are so BOORING and sound all the same should know more about what is music and what isn't.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, opinions are like assholes everybody has one and it stinks. I'm sorry there are far more horrible singers than Alexi.

Not to get into an Alexi vs Dream Theater debate, but what makes him the authority on whether the guys in Dream Theater are having fun or not?

There may be "more" horrible singers but Alexi's vocals are still horrible. I like his playing, but he makes Uli Roth sound like a good singer! It's all about him saying something controversial to get some press. It worked.

          Re: Kick ass Vai quote

You guys will probably laugh when I say this, but I actually liked a lot of the early/mid 90's alternative. I can listen to Hootie and the Blowfish, Widespread Panic, The Spin Doctors, etc... These bands were very musical. I'm a HUGE fan of the band Live, although the guitar work is no big deal. I think alternative went to hell when Creed and all of the other Pearl Jam clones came along.

Having said that, I would love for shred to make a comeback. I'm so sick and tired of "rap metal" that I could scream. I'm tired of all the detuned, 7-string one-finger "chord" playing, baggy pants-wearing, backwards cap-wearing no-talent punks. I've also lost a ton of respect for the major guitar mags for jumping on that bandwagon.

Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Linkin Park can collectively line up and kiss my ass.

I want to see Yngwie become a force again, too.

I want it all and I want it NOW!!!!

Alexi's voice is fine for what he does....he's OK in that department..it's death metal....what do you want Luciano Pavarotti..

Alexi's playing is very focused and fresh...I seen him live four times...he has a complete command over his geetar...not as much as Loomis though...Loomis spanked him every time like a red headed step child with acne..

Johnny P..is a very established player ...I don't think Alexi meant his abilities as a guitarist ...but Dream Theatre does do a lot of wankery...which is very very boring and very well worn to me ...But they do it the best ..even better than Symphony X IMO

Dudes, If you remeber right I met Alexi...and I thought he was a ass Hole...when I meet a person and say he's an ass...its for a reason.....damn good reasons!

I was hanging with my friend Jeff Loomis and we both thought he was an ass...and his tone sucked..

Now I see he tried to kill himself just around the time that I did meet him...so yep I'm right again..there was definitely a malfuntion going on with that fag when I did meet him...but he's a great player.

I can't knock his paying but I can knock his person...because I can do that!

Whether you like him or not ...he is doing what we all wanted to do...make shred cool to the kiddies again...so fuggit!

I have a pic of me and Alexi...I wish I could post it...it was during our not so cool meeting...don't worry guys ...when I get an attitude ...I give it back tenfold.

That what's he saying.. He isn't in no way saying John has no talent. He isn't saying hes better than John or Dream Thearter. He's just saying that they look bored up there playing. That whole quote was blow out of context.

                  Re: Kick ass Vai quote

Fine I can understand that but I think a skilled muscian would understand how freaking insane Dream Theater is... That band plays HArmonys and with speed and precission more than anyone else and maybe he doesn't appreciate but I find it hard to believe that he wants people to respect his skill because he looks more metal if not looser than Dream Theater. If he wants people to bring back loose playing and stage shows well Kurt Cobain's widow is available or James Hetfield. I really don't like how the comment sits Alexi is killer but he better chose his words more carefully. Dream Theater has carried the torch(not solely mind you) of skilled Rock/Metal musicians since the downfall sad that because DT are that good they have to be knocked for having death paint or silly costumes and no stage show. Blah Alexi was cool to me (although he thought I worked for VHT) and he is a killer player but he should respect the torh carriers. For instance he was the only metal "lesson guy" in GW not to payhomage to Dime granted the others were Dimes friends still.....

                    Re: Kick ass Vai quote

He mentioned Dime several times actually...well Pantera.

He gives him "props" as an inspiration ...along with dudes like Vai and Zakk...yada yada

Alexi acted like a little punk when I met him...he's a great player.

We all know whay DT is capable of..he was doggin' the music...not the players..

I myself can appreciate DT as a musician..I have all of their material and dvds and BS..but they can be VERY boring at times to the point of being ridiculous...they get a great groove or hook and then quickly go into a 20 minute , finely tuned , highly polished , long winded wankathon...then go back into the hook...end of song...next song ...same damn thing....nexy album...same damn thing.

                    Thank Rush for this!!

My friends are in a decent local Prog Metal band called Antithesis...and believe me ..all these fuggin' progsters always seem to get lost with their abilities and technical BS than creating "music"..well I guess that is why they call it "Progressive"...there is so many other prog bands of the DT calibre IMO...that never get mention..well besides Symphony X (Threshold , Vanden Plas , Pagans Mind , Adagio , Shadow Gallery to name a couple) ...and all the prog stuff follows this same formula...all with their 45 minute opus and wankery whatnots..you know the formula...operatic singing , gay sounding keyboards a plenty , six , seven , eighteen string basses , neil pert on steriods drummers , and some dick from GIT putting all those years of theory to use and then some...not to create awesome music but to wank very proudly amoung other wankers..

I can poke fun at ANY metal or music genre...because all the genres sound the same ...be it Power , Death Prog or Black metal...

there is great and suck in every style....every style whether you like it or not.

and in the whole scheme of things I mean the big picture...Alexi and John could not trade places....both are equally good at what they do...I even give more credit to Alexi because he's fronting the band while shredding his ass off..and he seems to do it without effort at a very very early age...and that is "good"!

But I still think Alexi is a little fag...

can't wait to see him play at the house of blues soon..

There is not enough hours in the day to enjoy all the incredible talent out there..

BTW I have "an evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess" playing right now....it's on Vai's Favored Nation label....it's cool if your a fan of John's playing.

Alexi was lucky to get featured in an article with 2 gods like Zakk and Vai. I've only heard one Children Of Bodom song (Needled 24/7) and thought it was quite good actually. But it still can't touch Zakk or Vai's best stuff.

Not to blow any raw smoke in yer butt dude. BUT , how can you judge a player by hearing a COB song "once"..

Zakk is a very established player..there is no mysteries to his body of work...just put on the radio and wait a couple of seconds for an Ozzy tune..

and as brilliant a player Vai is....he didn't put out all gems...(or is that Jems)..

I always like Vai best in a band effort myself ...I'm still a big fan of his work in Alkatraz....and he fit like a square peg in a round hole with Whitesnake.

The dude that should be the new young Guitar hero is Loomis..he'd teach them all a thing or two..I assure you.

So Yeah I would say ...like always , destiny is one half luck and one half skill...

because nobody is that good and nobody is that lucky.

Bottom line is ...You couldn't strap a ESP to Vai or Zakk and tell him to front COB..

they all have their own voice and something special to offer as most great players.

There is still plenty of Eventide on this one.

This album has the most number of unique guitar tones I think I've ever heard. He definitely spent a lot of time crafting the guitar tones specifically for each tune. Plenty of 7-string playing too. And lots of nods to Zappa in terms of instrumentation and arrangements.
