• Strange request - mid east/Indian influenced rock

Okay, weird request, but the JCF is full of some knowledgeable mofos, so here goes:

I probably couldn't listen to 5 minutes of sitar music, but I really dig some of the rock tunes that have a middle eastern / Indian type flair to them. Stuff like "Taste of India" by Aerosmith, "Magic Ride" by Gary Hoey, "Bangkok" and "Fire Garden Suite" by Steve Vai, and even that little part about 2 and a half minutes into YYZ.

Can anyone recommend some more music like this? Maybe even a band from that part of the world that has the cultural influence, but still rocks?

thanks
dave

Indian/Egyptian themes were very popular in the 60-70's.
A great deal of public interest was generated during the early 70's by artists for helping countries in Asia like Bangladesh for their econonmic/food needs.
Dan Electro had also produced an electric sitar during this time which was very popular.

Some popular ones:

Paint it Black - Stones
Norwegian Wood - Beatles (not necessarily Indian, but has a folk flavor with a sitar)
Love You To - Beatles
Within You Without You - Beatles
Real Life Permanent Dream - Tomorrow (Steve Howe)

Harrison studied with Ravi Shankar and the Beatles were all into the whole meditation/Guru thing.
There are more, ..have to think on it.

I just thought of a few other songs.

Iron Maiden - "Nomad" (has that Arabic feel)
Iron Maiden - "Powerslave" (has that Egyptian feel)

The Offspring - "Come Out And Play" (unforgettable catchy Indian riff)
The Offspring - "PAy The Man" (has that swirling flangy Indian feel)

I am told that Megadeth has a lot of exotic ethnic solos, but I don't really listen to Megadeth, so I would not know.

And check out Strunz and Farah too.. They're very middle eastern.

"Rare and Precious Chain" off the album Roots to Branches and the title track from "Dot-Com," both by Jethro Tull.

I can't remember which track it was, but Vai had a sitar piece on his Whitesnake album.

A little more new-agey, but Mike Oldfield (yes, the Exorcist theme guy) has two really great world music records — "Ommadawn" and "Amarok." Both feature some unbelievable guitar and bass work.
please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

Band name Shadowfax, song title "New Electric India". They were classified as "New Age", but they were actually more like progressive rock/Jazz.

"In the Name of God" by Dream Theater.

I like that stuff a lot to. Much of it is based around the "Ahava Rhaba" scale; take a harmonic minor scale, but start on the fifth instead of the root of the harmonic minor.

check these guys out for sure... another band (also from Turkey) is Pentagram, pretty cool middle eastern metal.

Also:

Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
Lamb of God - the faded line (short part around 2:00 but cool)
Metallica - Where ever I may roam
Megadeth - Holy Wars

Take a look at The Tea Party. Those guys play mideastern themes all the time...they even try to integrate the actual instruments into their songs. How do they sound? Imagine Jim Morrison getting raped by Indira Ghandi while jamming with a second rate Rush.

There's a swedish band called House of Shakira that has some mid east/indian flavor to some of their songs. They have a commercial melodic sound, not metal.
