i knew it was tuned differently but figured it would just make my knowledge just a little more diverse. i was thinking of buying a cheap one of each (dean banjo and cheaper yamaha classical) but was wondering if a nicer one of one or the other would be a better choice since it would most likely be easier to pick up on.

I own a cheapo Yamaha classical and use it for same reason your lookin to do. When I want to fingerpick something, I just take it out of the closet and use it. The advantage I find, is you can sit there all day and your left hand fingers won't get uncomfortable or hurt. I tried that with my Martin and forget it. The steel strings after a while get uncomfortable. My 2 cents
