Similar to a bucket brigade (as Sully put it), I have developed an idea that will save us all money, prevent breakage, allow us to meet and greet other members, and check out each other's gear in the process!
The proposal is this...a JCF shipping network.
Say I wanted to ship a guitar to Atomic Tommy. We'd make the transaction as normal EXCEPT I would not charge him shipping fees. I would simply drive the guitar to the next JCF member's house closest to me in a Westerly direction. Hopefully within an hour's drive or so.
That member would in turn drive it to the next person's house and so on and so forth. While this might take a little longer than FedEx Overnight service, the guitar would be practically guaranteed to arrive alive.
Through this process, literally hundreds of JCF members will get to know each other through face to face meetings. Also, as the network grows and more guitars are shipped through the network, efficiencies will be realized based on who lives where, who lives near who, and we can start to track delivery times and such.
Since we're online all the time, all the tracking can be accomplished through the JCF in a new forum. There would be a thread per package and each member in the network with items in transit would report in on the thread.
Furthermore if a particular piece of gear requires attention such as repairs or maintenance, it could be routed through particular members who would be willing to take a look at the items as they pass through their hands.
Another benefit of this service would be that we no longer have to take the time and expense (and risk) of boxing up and packing guitars. It takes as much time to do that properly as it takes to drive 30 miles!
Kevin Maynard, we'll start with you. Drive that maple Charvel down to Chucksplatter tonight. Chuck can drive it to Soloist1 in CT. Soloist1 can drive it to Toejam in NJ. Toejam can drive it to Budman in PA, and Budman can drop it off to Fritzreiser in MD and Fritz can bring it to me in VA. And I'll be a happy camper!
Thank you for your support!
