mickey still has the record for the longest homer doesn't he? something like 560 feet. that's unreal.

i dunno man, i don't think it counts, but papi had one that hit the roof in some dome in japan. trajectory calculations (i thought) made it about 571. again, this was a few months ago, so i may not remember as clearly.

Don't worry about that, I'm pretty damn loyal to the Twins because I grew up in minneapolis.

Oh great a freaking Twins fan... Well I can officially say you are going down... Damn I wish my Sox had the heart of your twins and maybe this year they will

Really? Excellent. Stupid Twins broke us last year when we didn't have teh balls to stand up to Tori Hunter. Man the Twins are not a stacked team but they play tough and play right. Try that again Tori this year a Former Twin is going to be waiting for you @ home.

THis whole steroids thing confuses me a little. First off, it's illegal and this new policy the players and owners agreed to is . You get I don't know how many chances. First time is, like a 4 game suspension. What kind of is that. First time you fail a piss test in the military, your gone. Should be a year suspension the first time and if you get caught a 2nd time, off to the 'may I take your order' counter at Burger King.
Now where I get confused is, I realize steroids bulks you up, can make your bat swing faster, shrinks your dick, etc. I personally don't think it has much to do with coordination. for example. You can get a McGuire or Bonds to swing fast, whatever, but I agree with Bonds on the hand-eye coordination. If you don't have that, then you got a pumped up guy hitting towering fly balls all the time.
Tommy mentioned Mantle holding the record for the longest homerun 560 or 565 feet. Why can't someone with a keen eye, say like a Bonds or Sosa consistently hit a ball 400-420 feet. That's enough to put it out of most ballparks, right.
Personally I think the steroids thing is blown out of proportion. That's just my opin.

Anything that makes you bigger faster and stronger is an unfair advantage...if you have no talent steroids will not help you hit a baseball. However if you have these abilities faster bat speed is a huge advantage. You have about 9/10ths of a second to figure out what a pitch is decide if it is in the strike zone and swing....If you have the bat speed to wait a fraction of a second longer before you have to swing That is a huge advantage.

The arguement against steroids is not hand/eye coordination. Everyone seems to be in agreement that there isn't a drug that can make you hit a curve ball better. Steroids allow players to recover quicker then those who aren't using them, providing more strength/energy on a day to day basis.
The other problem is they may help players to artificilly extend their carreers just to shatter some long standing record.

Don't get wrong, I am totally against steroids for the fact that they do give a player an advantage, faster runner, career longevity, shrunken dicks (that's not an advantage, is it). Those are things players can control, like running around a base, pushing on ARod while your still wearing your mask .
Seriously, I don't think it helps you get more hits to win a batting title like Canseco did. As for bat speed, normally your looking for pitch. So if you're sitting on a change-up and the pitcher throws you a fastball, it ain't gonna make a bit of difference. You're still gonna screw yourself in the ground.
As much as I don't like steroids, and those caught doing it, knowing it's illegal, I don't see how it gives an advantage in the hits/homeruns department. It does in other aspects of the game, I'll agree.
Like I was saying before, people like Sammy, Mark, Brady Anderson , can hit the ball 400-450 feet. That's enough to go over the fence. How about looking at the ball, or the quality of pitchers or the way the ground crews doctor the field.
I guess I just have a problem blaming personnal accomplishments on steroids, when in fact it could be other things.
Ok, my fingers are getting tired. Let me rub some of that steroid cream on my hands and I'll be right back.

What is sad is that with the advances in strength and physical training, and the aid of computerized diagnosis of the ultimate swing that the players could use etc... these records *could* have broken without the use of steroids, guess we'll never know. Its a touchy subject no doubt but it doesn't seem fair. It also isn’t fair to strip them of their records, just add an asterisk to it and *doped up pin-dick on steroids
I also don't think it fair to compare players of different eras either; the game was different back then than it is now
