Re: Angel of Retribution: new Judas Priest out to

I've listened to this a bunch of times now. It's really grown on me. Favorite tracks are Hellrider, Demonizer and Angel. Only complaint is the last track is a bit plodding and slow, not really good "closer" material.

Re: Angel of Retribution: new Judas Priest out to

I downloaded this to give a listen and I like it enough to buy which I'm going to do today. Overall I think it's a really good album, but then I didn't go into it thinking 'Painkiller II' either. For sure worth my $12 and many listens going forward.

Re: Angel of Retribution: new Judas Priest out to

I just bought this yesterday and haven't listened to the whole thing yet, I like it so far though! But then, I'm a big Priest fan anyway.
I paid a lot more than $12 for mine! Waa! But I got a DVD with it too, so there ya go. I think the album looks really classy too. Not ghey at all! (kidding, I'm kidding). But really, it looks awesome.

Re: Angel of Retribution: new Judas Priest out to

Yeah, I got the DVD version, too. Mainly because the regular CD version was that double-sided crap (I hate that!), but the video part was interesting. It's pretty obvious Ken has false teeth. It was pretty cool how Rob just sorta "stalked" the stage, rather than interacting much with the other bandmembers. I also really loved his expression when Living After Midnight started up, like "Yep, that's right, now YOU do the singing."

The more tradional Joan Baez-ish performance of Diamonds and Rust was a bit much, though. But I always preferred the SOD version...

Re: Angel of Retribution: new Judas Priest out to

Someone needs to take Travis' other kick pedal away - enough is enough, and that's his only trick.
As well, someone needs to remind Glenn and KK that they are not Murray and Smith, and to lay off the Iron Maiden impressions. JP were always better with riffage than syncronized shredding, and they sound like crap on the new one.

And the double Halford scream/growl thing is reeeeealy getting old.

I guess they NEED to go back to being poor to do it the right way.
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

Hey, don't hold back, Newc. Tell us how you really feel!

Well, the goal was create a "classic" Judas Priest record. Even as a casual JP listener, I can tell you that they, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Uriah Heep, Nazareth, etc. "borrowed" stylistic elements from each other every now and then. So for Priest to come up with new material that should resemble their "classic" catalogue, it's probably only inevitable that they were going to dip into other bands' bits, as well.

But here's a question for anybody who knows:

In the AoR package, there was a little ad for all the JP back catalog, re-issued and re-mastered with "upgraded sound." Now, what did they do to "upgrade" the sound exactly? Basically, are these re-issues good like the Iron Maiden ones, or bad like the Ozzy and Megadeth ones?

Re: Angel of Retribution: new Judas Priest out to

The JP remasters were digitally remastered from the original tapes where possible by Rick Atley - yes the cheezy Rick Astley that had the pop hit 'together forever' in the mid 80s. He apparently is a hell of a tech when it comes to mixing, noise reduction, and such. He messed up a few things, overly applied noise reduction and stuff, go the guitars backwards (wrong side for KK and Glenn) on Defenders, and other stuff, but these are not modified like Ozzy did (removing Bob Daisley and Kerslake) Ozzy's remasters are an abortion, JPs are cleaner and better than the originals - though the extras are pretty weak overall. The live extras are good though.

WELL SPOKEN MY MAN!

Judas Priest are certainly among the best in "mainstream" metal in my opinion.

Priest's "AOR".
No, its not their best work but its definitely a nice strong and balanced reunion album. I have it and enjoy it.
I just burned a mix cd of older and new Priest tunes.
Painkiller is definitely one among fifteen others.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...
