Re: Thinking about a new camera...
My wife has one. It's a real nice camera. We haven't been dissapointed yet with it. It's pretty easy to use for someone that doesn't know alot about camera's but has the advanced functions/features that are common in traditional SLR camers.http://www.jacknapalm.com/

Re: Thinking about a new camera...
I was going through Canon's site, and all over Ebay, looking for a decent price. So far they seem to hover around $680-$700 at the lowest for just the body (no lens, most people on Ebay have also already gotten the Rebate from the box lid).
The one thing I couldn't find was the memory card size limit. One place had an optional 4 GB card you could get for it, but there was nothing in the Canon PDF brochure about what size it can and cannot take.
I was also looking at the specs for the XT which is coming out in a few weeks, so I might wait till then and see how much they're going for, and how far the DR drops.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

Re: Thinking about a new camera...
Digital SLR's are cool, the the Canon is badass IF you need an SLR. You are gonna pay for the body and lens ('s), and in the end will have LOTS of money wrapped up in the whole shebang. If you are a good photographer and NEED what an SLR will give you, then by all means go for it. If you don't know what the SLR will do over a regular digital camera, then you can save a lot of money by not getting the SLR.
"SLR" is the new buzzword in digital cameras, and there are lots of folks buying them just because they're cool, and suddenly they are becoming affordable. But for 90% of those people, they are using them like a regular point and shoot. What a waste of hardware.
If you are looking on the photo sites like DP Review and Steve's Digicams, it's pretty easy to sucked into the digital SLR hype, but really, there's precious few instances where you'll be lacking for NOT having and SLR in the real world. I almost bought into the "Need an SLR" mentality, but stopped myself in the 11th hour by being honest with myself in regards to what I was going to use the camera for. I went with the Panasonic DMC-FZ20. Awesome camera...check it out!

Right on the money you are. I've been shooting for 7 years and for me and SLR is something I used. Thinking of going for the 20D, but too many guitars to buy right now, lol. For your original question, the EOS Rebel is a pretty good camera though. Can't pretend to know much bout it spec wise, but I've used it a few times before and it's decent.

Re: Thinking about a new camera...
While I'm not a pro photographer, I want that kind of control and quality. I'm happy with my Olympus D600L, up to a point, but it's better for closeups and portraits, but not so hot on anything beyond 20 feet. I want manual focus control, but also want autofocus that actually works. Plus I like the features of the Canon in regards to setting the focal point offcenter in either direction. That's artistic type stuff I don't have to do in Paint Shop.
Besides, can't get that Online Amateur Porn site making me money with "regular" crappy pics I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

Re: Thinking about a new camera...
I am not sure what size cards it accepts. I don't have the manual with me. I can leave a message for my wife and see if she can find the specs on the card capabilities. She bought a few 512 meg cards and that keeps her going for a long time. There are different quality settings I think that will allow for more pictures to be stored. I think it uses 4.something mega pixels for lower res stuff.
I bought it for her when it first came out and I know the price has come down since then. Keep an eye out as some places advertise a low price but it may not come with any lens. You can expect to buy an extended battery right off and some sort of zoom lens. She had an older rebel but I think an after market lens she had for that wasn't compatible with the digital rebel. Depending on what you have or don't have expect to shell out quite a bit more.http://www.jacknapalm.com/

Re: Thinking about a new camera...
I finally had a chance to look at the manual for the Rebel and all it says is Type I and II CF cards. It does not give a max size. On Canon's site they have cards up to 512 meg. The RAW format, which is the best, is on average 7 meg per image.http://www.jacknapalm.com/

Re: Thinking about a new camera...
Cool, thanks. I assume since some of the online stores and Ebay stores were doing 2 and 4 GB card bundles that it can handle those.
It may seem like overkill, but when you have something like NAMM where there's tons of stuff to take pics of, carrying around 10 cards and trying to remember which ones have been shot (and risking them erasing themselves, like one of mine did), it's just easier to not bother with reloading.
By contrast, my D600 uses 8 Meg cards, and I get 8 or 9 shots per card on High, and 100 on Low. Low is looooow but High's pretty good. It saves as uncompressed BMP, though, which is good.
I never use JPG compression, even in Paint Shop. I set it all the way down to 1 to maintain the quality.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

Re: Thinking about a new camera...
The April issue of Popular Photography has a review on 9 digital SLR's. It reviews the Rebel in it. It's probably worth a look if your getting ready to buy. It didn't rate as high as some of the others but doesn't cost as much as the others either.
Canon also just announced the 8 Megapixel Rebel XT. Looks like it's price is what the Rebel went for and the Rebel is now at 799.00 as a kit. Not sure about availability for the XT however.http://www.jacknapalm.com/

Re: Thinking about a new camera...
That's one thing I was waiting for - the XT. I knew it'd be priced to compete with the DR, and figured they'd drop the price on the DR as well.
Since the XT is the "new thang", I'm sure MSRP is the new street price, so I can either wait a while or go with the cheaper 6MP DR.
Hmmmm.
Got some shopping to do. If only these damn Ebay bastards would quit posting cool shit!
Damn USA JJ for $450 and shit I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood
